A jury in Norristown Pennsylvania convicted William Earnest of murder after nearly five hours deliberation, recommending the death penalty. The 36-year-old Philadelphia cook sobbed on the stand as the verdict was read, while prosecutors labeled the case a grave crime tied to the Duke tobacco family connection and Mrs Ethel Atkins.
Washington December 6 07 Friends of Vice President Garner said they expect him back in Washington for the inauguration of President Roosevelt and Vice President Elect Wallace on January 4. Garner has been visiting elsewhere.
The individual has remained at a Texas home since October and has not stated plans to return. Friends expect a comeback at the start of the new year, though no confirmation has been given.
The Associated Press reports that on this day in December 1915 the United States protested Austria's submarine sinking of the steamship Ancona in the Mediterranean. Americans aboard were among those affected by the attack and the incident drew diplomatic tension.
