Distress calls from three ships were picked up by Mackay Radio within eight hours as a north Atlantic storm worsened conditions near submarines. A Greek tanker Aghia Eirine reported broken steering gear and heavy seas at 52 21 N 23 40 W, about 600 miles west of Ireland. Earlier, Greek steamer Taygetos sent for aid while off Britain, and British Saltwick reported steering failure about 700 miles off Scotland with battering seas.
