Senator Shepard of Texas chairs a Senate resolution directing a study by the agriculture secretary via the grain futures administration. The inquiry covers cotton exchanges in the first half of 1950 and the prior four years, seeking figures on short selling and public gains or losses.
The U S Department of Agriculture recommended an appropriation of 25 million dollars for seed feed and fertilizer loans to farmers in drouth areas. A meeting of the agriculture committee was planned to speed action as demand rises. Bills in both houses seek 60 million for seed and feed loans. Representative Aswell predicted at least that amount.
Mrs. Charles J. Johnson 45 of Steele Missouri was shot in the chest and hospitalized in Memphis while her husband a wealthy Missouri farmer lay dead at New Madrid after a hunting lodge incident. A son quoted his mother as saying Johnson shot himself accidentally while cleaning a pistol during a joke with Mrs. Johnson. The wife’s condition was listed as critical.
Plans for a community Christmas gift service to enlist schools clubs churches and businesses aim to assist the needy at Christmas. Receipts will be shared equally by Monroe Welfare Association and the Salvation Army. A morning ceremony at Paramount theater on December 21 features a manger scene and the parish school glee club.
New York says Martha Bevins a 20 year old flying housewife was forced to land at Jacksonville Pennsylvania about 40 miles from Easton while attempting a transcontinental women’s air record. She took off at 7 15 a m E S T for the Pacific coast to beat Ruth Nichols’s 16 hours 59 minutes 12 seconds.
The price of gasoline increased by 2 cents per gallon today led by Gulf Refining. Cash price rises to 15 1/2 cents per gallon and credit price to 16 1/2 cents per gallon, including state 5 cent tax and city 1 cent tax.
President Hoover opposed extending reduced income taxes as he alerted Congress to a 180 million dollar treasury deficit in prospect for the year. He filed a 3.93 billion dollar budget for the next fiscal year and warned continued relief measures may trigger another deficit in 1932.
Three unmasked white men robbed the Exchange bank in Birmingham early today taking about $1500 from the cashier’s cage. They tied five people with ropes and escaped by car toward Montgomery. Cashier W T O’Hara estimated more than $3000 appeared to be taken.
The Ouachita parish police jury named today a roads committee to act as liaison with the state highway commission. The body will present requests for aid to build hard surfaced main roads and laterals, subject to police jury approval, to advance parish road programs.
Fort Sam Houston soldier James R. Adams 21 pleaded guilty to killing his two weeks old bride. A jury recommended against the death sentence and Adams must serve life at Fort Leavenworth Kansas. Police tie the case to a Mississippis Amite county family and a body found beneath a car in Salado Creek on the army reservation.
In New Orleans area, deputy U S marshal Emile Kinler was seized by icy Bayou Terre Aux Bouefs waters after arresting Anthony Paterno and John Guate on Oak River for alleged federal injunction violations. The two prisoners braved the cold, carried Kinler to Guate's sister's home, and revived him before bringing him to the city.
Streams of destitute citizens moved through Monroe toward the health unit as over 100 crippled children arrived with mothers and fathers for a free clinic. The event aimed to provide care for aged and disabled residents, offering aid despite long illnesses and poverty.
Hammond December 3 The grand jury of St. Helena parish announced indictments against all officers of the Georgeville Farmers association of Georgeville St Helena parish. Charges stem from complaints by farmers who shipped strawberries last season through the association and say no returns were made and they nearly lost their entire crop due to the association's management.

The W. L. Herbert Jewelry store in Ruston was entered last night by burglars using a pass key. Watches, diamonds and other high quality pieces totaling about 4000 dollars were taken from the safe. Mrs. L. H. Herbert and a helper saw the entry and locked the stock for the night around 11 30 p m. Sheriff A J Thigpen and Lincoln parish investigators pursued leads.
Pass Manchac December 3 two sisters Marjorie Reno 10 and Clarabelle 8 plunged into 20 foot water to rescue their 14 month old brother Albert Reno from drowning. The child floated offshore until revived by a doctor’s instructions over the telephone before the physician arrived.
Senate campaign funds committee chair Nye says expenditures reached 272 312 for the Davis Brown primary ticket in Pennsylvania, over the 368 2 previously reported in May. House and Senate conferees near a dispute on Muscle Shoals legislation, aiming to send the bill for government operation to the House. A El Sol reporter in Madrid attempted to assassinate Premier Berenguer in his office but was stopped by guards. Johnson of the House immigration committee proposes a five year immigration suspension.
Ouachita parish A P police jury approves a voluntary tick eradication program with 53 vats. Dr. S H Still warns a state law is needed for success and cites costs over 20000 dollars yearly. Inspector S H Rogers will oversee the effort. no range riders will be hired.
Captain G. B. Cooley, president of the Ouachita parish tuberculosis and public health association, urges parish support for a schoolchildren preventorium next year. He cites South Carolina findings where 400 of 4 000 examined had tuberculosis and 80 with active germs, noting early treatment could nearly wipe out the disease.
Dwight W. Morrow was sworn in today as a United States senator from New Jersey. He took the oath with Vice President Curtis present, joined by Senator Kean at the start of the session to complete Senate membership.
Clarence E. Faulk was elected president of the Monroe Kiwanis Club for 1931 at today’s annual officer election. He has long served the club and has been first vice-president this year. Other officers elected include First VP Dr. A. J. Emerson and Second VP Dr. F. K. Hirsch, with Louis Hullum continuing as trustee. The board also lists T. O. Brown Fred Williamson Albert Marx H. F. Madison John Breard Herman Masur and Fred Coon. Visitors included Rev. D. H. Ware of Greenville Miss and Nelson of Jackson Miss’ Lamar Life Insurance.
After decades on the docket a divorce case is dismissed. Procedural technicalities were repeatedly used by both sides and a brief reconciliation occurred. The judge ruled that any possible case had been outlawed under French law which forbids publishing the names.
A posse from Ouachita parish hunts Joe Welch, a 45 year old described as a negro, who struck farmer W. R. Platt with an axe over a $2.25 debt. Platt, wounded, was treated at St Francis, as deputies guard roads near the Dixie Overland highway. Welch fled into the Steep bayou district west of Monroe, with a large search effort led by Sheriff Milton Coyerdale.
Southwestern carriers asked the Interstate Commerce Commission for permission to lower cotton freight rates from interior points to Texas seaports. They argued trucks already haul more cotton over distances up to 300 miles, risking loss of tonnage unless rates are reduced to meet motor truck competition.
