GuRge J. R. Thornton is slated for election to the United States Senate, with party and regional supporters rallying behind the candidate. The outcome hinges on turnout and campaign momentum as voters head to the polls.
The Baton Rouge session closes with Washington politics in focus as Judge Thornton appears favored for the U S Senate seat. Major figures including Senator Wimberley Congressman Brousard ex governor Blanchard and L E Thomas among others head to Alexandria New Orleans Shreveport on varied schedules. Thornton leaves for Alexandria but will return Monday while Wilkinson and Wilkinson’s Shreveport associates plan weekend visits.
Baton Rouge reports Representative J. L. Kaliski of Ouachita Parish states he will support the governor's Senate selection if he believes the judge chosen is suitable. He rejects dictation but trusts the governor's judgment and says opposing it would be a slap in the face of the governor.
Hon J L Kaliski, a Kaghita representative, returned to Baton Rouge this morning to end private business matters and comment on the senatorial race. He said Judge Thornton would win on the ballot and that he would eagerly support Rapides era. He stressed no ill will toward others named for the toga and praised Thornton as able and upright for the people’s service.
The General Assembly adjourned after a six oclock session as the Senate failed to reach a quorum yesterday morning preventing a meeting. Members were seated during the day and two House bills passed along with House bill No 1 by Mr Ignerty making an appropriation.
The chamber approved three Senate bills and two House bills, including a new bank note issue proposal. Aimed at funding session costs, House bill No. 4 allows banks to issue $500 certificates backed by State or political subdivision bonds.
