Fourteen farmers on picket lines were wounded when a car fired shotgun blasts through the lines and tear gas bombs were tossed. Sheriff Tilton asked the governor to send the militia as investigators review the latest violence in the Iowa farm produce strike.
Sheriff Charles McDonald of Douglas County reports picketers deserted Omaha highways after a protest action. Details forthcoming on page two.
A major blaze on Chartres Street near Canal Street, New Orleans, caused about 35000 damage to four four story wholesale houses. Fire crews controlled the fire within an hour. Origin undetermined, though inspectors cited the Welsh brothers wholesale sweater dealers building as the likely source.
Washington August 31 Major T. Q. Ashburn chairman of the federal inland waterways corporation will discuss tomorrow with Andrew Calhoun vice president of the American barge line the possibility of calling a conference of barge line operators to consider revisions in cotton rates.

Berlin reports Franz von Papen carrying a blanket death warrant for the new reichstag he signed via emergency decree before the assembly met. Goering seeks immediate audience with President Hindenburg as the Reichstag adjourns and Prussian landtag dates are set for Sept. 29.
In Texas primary voting, Miriam A. Ferguson widened her advantage over incumbent R S Sterling to 2 942 with Ferguson at 475 756 and Sterling at 473 714 as county tallies were adjusted. Eastland county revised results cut Sterling by 111 votes while Ferguson gained. Final counts show Ferguson leading in San Jacinto and Scurry counties. only six of 254 counties remain.
Mrs Frank Manley seeks release on bond at a preliminary hearing in Qua chita parish district court Friday at 10 00 am. She is charged with murder in the fatal shooting of Ted Reiser at his Plain street garage. Also jailed on related charges are Roy Smith and Orville Elmore who were detained after the shooting. Elmore was taken into custody and Manley was initially held as a materials witness before being charged.
In New Orleans a white man is killed and a companion wounded at a drink stand in the French Quarter. Police link the attack to a later volley fired into a nearby negro gambling house as a city-wide search for three men is issued.
Captain J A Mollison abandoned plans for a nonstop return to England from Sydney Nova Scotia and will sail home from Quebec on September 3. Dr Freeman O Neil recommends rest of three to four weeks amid concerns for his safety and health. Lord Wakefield urged cancellation of the air return for national and aviation reasons.
Private cotton traders testified before the Shannon congressional committee on government competition with private business. Representative E E Cox of Georgia interrupted to say the case has been proven that government is too involved in business and should withdraw. He added there is a legitimate field for the federal farm board.
Residents in Monroe and West Monroe witnessed a partial solar eclipse today with smoked glasses and telescopes. The event reached about 60 percent coverage at 2:40 p.m. and waned by 3:41 p.m., drawing crowds and skyward interest.

San Francisco Aug 31 Victory for William Gibbs McAdoo war time treasury secretary seeking the California Democratic senatorial nomination and a threat to Senator Samuel Shortridge for renomination on the Republican ticket highlighted early returns from the state primary. State Senator Tallant Tubbs of San Francisco led Shortridge by more than 25 000 votes in returns from 5749 precincts.
In Manchester on August 31, 145 000 Lancashire textile operatives joined a walkout over a ten per cent wage cut and worsened conditions. Trade unions estimate the number to be rising, with officials predicting a complete industry stoppage by week end.
Biloxi Mississippi August 31 Shrimp factories await action by striking fishermen on a proposal to pay prices now being paid by Louisiana fishermen. Louisiana price is below that demanded by the fishermen.
In Shreveport and DeSoto Parish a pistol carrier abducted a couple and robbed them of $30. Deputy J. Swearingen and Deputy A. Keith pursued for 15 miles and captured 28 year old Jack Collins, an ex convict, on charges of kidnapping and highway robbery. The suspect was jailed after the dramatic chase.
A Monroe recreation department sponsored parade showcased 26 acts and 12 sideshows leading to Forsythe park circus tents. The event featured a firemen band, calliope, orchestra, trick horse, tap dancing, and 20 clowns with free rides home offered to children paying five cents.
Ernest Goff of Ouachita parish sues Sin Clair Refining and George Fellows claiming injuries from a May 11 crash on the Dixie Overland highway six miles west of West Monroe. Goff seeks 18374 for contusions lacerations shock spinal injury and eye impairment with four to six months of medical treatment.
Opelousas attorney W C Perrault asked a court to cite eight Evangeline parish Democratic executive committee members for contempt of court. He alleged they violated an order by recognizing polling official lists submitted by nine dummy candidates for public service commissioner.
The Weather Bureau issued a hurricane warning for the gulf region from Biloxi Mississippi to Panama City Florida with tropical disturbance expected to cross near Pensacola causing northeast gales and possible hurricane force winds. In Apalachicola Florida winds reached 35 to 38 mph with heavy rain and falling barometer as the tropical storm moved northwestward across the Gulf of Mexico.
Reports from the national observatory indicate a disturbance near the Virgin Islands has drifted north of Puerto Rico and toward the northwest likely to dissipate over the Atlantic. Father Lanza of the Berlin observatory notes the storm extending from the Virgin Islands to a considerable distance.
At Clare's crossing three miles west of La Grande Kentucky a car carrying Walter Douglas 62 Lula Douglas 49 Prentice Douglas 39 Mabel Douglas 19 Matilda Douglas 15 was struck by a Louisville and Nashville passenger train. Mabel died before aid arrived. The train was traveling from Lexington to Louisville.
In Boston area a string of fifty one astronomical expeditions gathered at dawn to observe the afternoon total eclipse. Tele scopes trained northeast, crowds arriving by train and car, with police guiding safety and traffic amid a mass viewing event spanning Montreal to Cape Cod.
