Brotherhood leaders announce an order for a mass strike beginning Labor Day affecting industries nationwide. Protest plans call for coordinated action and workplace stoppages to pressure employers and government for policy changes. Local chapters prepare picket lines and support networks.
President Wilson planned to go before Congress to push a bill aimed at preventing a nationwide railroad strike. He met with railroad presidents and union leaders, urging withdrawal of a tentative strike for September 4, while a commission study of the dispute was proposed. The administration’s program includes an eight hour day for railroad workers and a Canadian style dispute law.
Aug 29 reports from Dallas show Culberson leading Colquitt with about 70,000 votes as Texas returns come in. Final tallies from 220 counties indicate Culberson 155,947 to Colquitt 88,455. Messages from Thomas Love and John Garner praised President Wilson and the Democratic landslide.
Teague Texas Aug 29 State Commissioner of Insurance and Banking John Patterson shot in the lobby of Farmers and Merchants Bank as he began to post a notice that the bank had been closed. State Banking Examiner J B McKinnon fired three times with no hits. T R Watson president and two sons W R Watson cashier and J E F Watson vice president were arrested on assault to murder charges and later released on bonds. Patterson, about 15 years old and living in Austin, was taken to a hotel where doctors said his condition was grave with a poor chance of recovery as one bullet penetrated his right lung.
Longview Texas Aug 24 The city council met in a special session at 2 PM and accepted the resignations of Mayor G A Bodenheim and Alderman G N Campbell by unanimous vote. A mayor pro tem will serve until a successor is chosen. The resignations were expected and drew little comment as the council adjourned to its regular meeting next Monday night.
Columba August 29 The Democratic gubernatorial race in South Carolina closes with a whirlwind finish. Five candidates appear on the ballots but three lead the contest Manning the incumbent Blease former governor 1911 1915 and Cooper. The campaign centers on Manning and Blease over enforcement of prohibition and related laws shaping the party’s policy debate.
Arch bishop Sebastian G Messineh long a leading Roman Catholic figure in the United States marks his seventieth birthday in Milwaukee on August 29. Born in Switzerland he came to America after ordination in 1871 and taught at Seton College before holding canon law at the University of Washington. He became bishop of Green Bay in 1892 and was later named archbishop of Milwaukee after Archbishop Kaer’s death in 1993.
Oakland Cal Aug 28 Compton Vaughan son of the late Kate Compton Vaughan Southern authoress was found guilty this morning of murder in the second degree for the killing of George Barnet at the Spring Valley Water Company dam near Sunol on the night of July 5. The jury was locked in all night and Vaughan claimed self defense saying Hornet would have injured him in a quarrel over a ponie card. Judge Trabucco will pronounce sentence on Monday.
A 44 person Louisiana delegation of farmers tankers newspaper men and business representatives arrived in Madison after visiting Port Atkinson and Hoards Dairyman founder ex Governor W D Hoard's farms. Dean Dodson of Louisiana Agricultural College noted visits to Palber and Carnation farms and several small dairies. Today they planned tours of the State University Wisconsin Experimental Station and additional dairy farms.
President Wilson today signed the army and navy appropriation bills and the Philippine and uniform bill of lading bills in a ceremony with many senators representatives and army and navy officers present.
Desperate fighting on the frontier between Roumania and Hungary pits Ferdinand 10 against opposing forces as a tense clash unfolds along disputed lines. Ranks clash amid winter conditions with reports of heavy casualties and strategic withdrawals.
Paris celebrates Romania joining the war with cheers and extra editions. Paris analysts expect Romania to shorten the conflict while Turkey may be crushed within months. Romanian forces are described as mobilizable to around 900,000 with detailed artillery and cavalry units.
Duluth Minn August 29 Several thousand school children staged a public exhibition showing work on the city’s playgrounds. The event was directed by municipal recreational director J R Batchelder with field races dances and playground contests and prizes for winners.
New York Aug 29 changes in the aim and policies of the proposed American Jewish congress were submitted to a referendum. The committee proposed the congress be used to secure full civil religious and political rights for Jews everywhere, extend group rights where recognized, and protect Jewish rights in Palestine.
Washington dispatch reports about 12 000 National Guard troops from Ohio Vermont and Kentucky mobilized to move to the Mexican border under War Department orders. The suspension of the earlier movement was revoked and all regiments will join General Funstons command as quickly as transportation allows with some units already moving tonight. About 14 000 guardsmen remain unaffected and were to depart earlier before the suspension. The move aims to fill regional units along the international line, but the strike threat paused the larger deployment.
President Wilson laid the railroad strike crisis before Congress and urged legislation to empower him to draft managers and workers into government service if needed to operate railroads. He cited eight hour day aims, court rulings, and urged peaceful settlement despite railroads fearing shippers’ pressure and Brotherhoods pushing for action.
Louise Green sixteen disappeared from the American Rescue Workers home and was found at H E McGaugh's two miles east of Dean station Union parish near the Little Rock Monroe railroad. She says Lonnie Ryals lured her away and promises to take her home. Authorities moved quickly to recover her for Monroe, arrest Ryals, and bring her to court.
Petrograd via London reports Roumania joins World War I against Russia. The foreign office cites three benefits: aiding the Romanian army against Austria, easing Russia’s western front tasks, and tightening the central powers' encirclement. It also notes the impact on grain supplies and a Bucharest dispatch about selling the Roumanian crop.
