New York August 27 Indications that the bottom of the present business low mood has been reached were seen in a Bank of America statement. It said a moderate recovery is expected soon with September and October likely better than July and August. The bank notes a general tendency to view developments pessimistically and that activity resumed slowly last month.
Bolivar Coahoma Washington and Leflore counties are in need of cotton pickers. Civic clubs in Cleveland and Bolivar County seat have been asked by growers to find labor. Other Delta counties will not begin picking on a large scale for a while and are amply supplied.
Four boys aged 10 to 15 died in a gravel cave-in near Bremen Muhlenberg county. Ezra Vincent 10 and R H Vincent 15 brothers Raymond Shanks 13 and J C Shanks 11 brothers were among the victims.
Theo Terzian, a leading local businessman, urges the federal government to provide work instead of loans or charity for Ouachita parish drought victims. He argues immediate employment programs would better serve the people and the nation, than advancing loans or fostering charity.
Ida Hymer a 29 year old waitress from Shreveport walked into the New Orleans police station in an emaciated state and pleaded for help. She said she had suffered since an operation and wished to be cured of her narcotics habit and requested transfer to the parish prison then to federal authorities for treatment.
A riot of more than 26 prisoners at a private rice farm near New Roads, Pointe Coupee Parish, ended with Curtis Blackwell, 19, fatally shot by guard John Stovall. Blackwell, jailed for assault and robbery, died as guards stormed the wooden cellhouse after the inmates refused to work.
American Consul General Frank B. Lockhart reported Chinese communists firing field pieces on ships 40 miles above Kiukiang. A shell narrowly missed a British vessel near 2 a.m. August 24, and Panay river gunboat silenced a nearby battery with no casualties. Evacuation of foreign women and children occurred to Changsha Harbor as the area remained tense.
Police jury announced a plan to prorate road construction jobs among needy farmers in Ouachita Parish. Employment will be distributed by farm families, with four families yielding one worker and twenty families yielding five workers. Pay is $2.50 per day for ten hours.
In Memphis, Ernest Lee Shirley, 54, and his wife, 49, camped behind the Shelby county jail while dodging police. The couple claimed they would leave when the law permitted, describing their stay as a protest against cops and authorities.
River stage data show 24 hour readings near 64.0 at Ouachita Camden and 18.5 at Monroe with a 0.1 rise noted. Flood present with stage changes recorded.
A Memphis man impersonating a Pullman assistant superintendent persuaded a coach foreman to attach a vacant sleeper to a St. Louis bound train and left the car as a deadhead. Officials believe the man posed as a former Pullman porter and plan to prosecute if captured.
Twenty five travelers from Los Angeles bound for Chicago and New York were stranded near Little Rock after their bus broke down. The Salvation Army helped the group with meals and lodging as they awaited telegrams for money. They blamed owner B C Elliott of National Stage Line for leaving El Paso and going to Mexico and asked police to locate him.
Three sailors reached the beach exhausted seeking help for a disabled schooner they left adrift 16 miles at sea yesterday with four other men aboard. They rowed 16 hours in a dory, then swam 2.5 hours after the vessel was sighted. Coast guards launched a search for the schooner.

Six aviators of the 52nd regiment of night patrol burned to death when their plane crashed through a farm roof near Leves four miles from Chartres. Officials at Le Bourget said no crash reports were received despite night bomber activity nearby. Names withheld pending family notification.
The U S weather bureau warned that a tropical hurricane sweeping from the south will affect Atlantic shipping south and southeast of Newfoundland in the next 24 hours. The disturbance centered about 500 miles south of Nantucket is moving northeast away from the coast with gales of 50 to 60 mph possible for northern Atlantic shipping.
Special to The News-Star Bastrop Aug. 27 W G McIntosh 48 manager of a Bastrop cleaning establishment shot himself yesterday and died today at the Bastrop clinic. He left no explanation but ill health and finances likely caused the act. Also Monroe launches Moody’s buy a bale movement with Milner Motor Co first to purchase 520 pounds at 15 cents a pound and store it at the company showroom. Moody urges southern governors to join a nationwide 15 cent cotton buy and hold plan.
War department assigns West Point Rhodes Scholars William Whipple Jr. of Baton Rouge Louisiana and Irvin R Schimmelprenning of Humphrey Nebraska to Oxford University for a two year study tour. They sail on the steamship Roosevelt September 10 and may apply for a one year extension.
Navy Lieutenant J P Deshazo was killed when his pursuit plane flipped and burned at the southeast end of the grand stand during the national air races in Chicago. The crash occurred as crowds cleared, spectator injuries were minimal, and fire crews quickly contained the 30 foot flame.
Curtiss-Wright Airport Chicago Aug 27 Wiley Post of Oklahoma City and Lee Schoenhair arrived after a 13 second finish gap in the Pacific non stop air derby. Post led after leaving Los Angeles and reached 5 39 04 pm, just 13 seconds ahead of Schoenhair as Art Goebel awaited the winner.
In Redding California on August 27 sheriff search for Rev Albert C Maxham pastor of the Full Gospel church on charges of assaulting a 13 year old girl. A warrant sworn by the girl’s mother led officers to the pastor who fled after saying goodbye to his wife and two month old baby.
In South Carolina Blease leads for democratic renomination with 600 precincts left as Byrnes contest looms. Idaho's Borah is renominated by the GOP and Mississippi Democrats renominate Harrison along with most house incumbents, signaling election as needed. Ross Collins holds his fifth district seat in Mississippi against Robert Harrelson.
