Dozens of Calpwele citizens gathered at Columbia to hear talks and debate the proposed bond issue. Attendees asked questions, shared views, and urged officials to consider funding for local projects.
Hon J J Meredith presided at a Columbia barbecue where Col Wm Polk of Alexandria Judge Gunby and Engineer 43 J Billinesty spoke on good roads. The gathering backed a Caldwell parish tax for a Columbia to Ouachita parish line road, with voters in wards one and two largely united in support. Polk, noted as a strong roads advocate, outlined economic benefits and local progress, urging continued public backing for the project.
Speakers including J. J. Billingsley urged permanent highway planning and prebuilding decisions. Judge Gunby supported a Columbia Ouachita parish road and urged forming a committee to seek ordinances and refer the matter to taxpayers. Enthusiasm rose as supporters raised hands for the good roads proposal.

Shreveport reports Jesse Hammett, the Black man accused of attempting to assault Mrs Walter George, was taken from the jail at Vivian and lynched by a mob on August 26. The event follows the arrest and detention in Louisiana.
The British Royal Navy auxiliary steamer Duke of Albany was torpedoed and sunk in the North Sea on Thursday. The commander and 22 crew members were lost. Eleven officers and 76 crew were saved.
Patrick Calhoun, grandson of a famed statesman and former San Francisco street railway figure, testified in a receivership here that only five dollars remained of a forty million dollar fortune after earthquakes and fires. He attributed the losses to the disasters five years past.
Washington Aug 26 The four great railroad brotherhoods warned of a nationwide strike if a definite reply on an eight hour day was not received by Saturday night. Executives submitted a counter proposal to President Wilson directing arbitration with retroactive wage increases if found due. A commission would oversee funding, and no further demands would be made during arbitration. The eight presidents and managers approved the draft after a week of work and limited votes.
