Patrols guard County Jail and Courthouse as Sheriff Lainson prepares for fresh action against National Farmers Holiday association picketers. Tear gas and clubs failed to clear highways near Council Bluffs, with about 250 pickets encamped at the jail and courthouse awaiting developments.
Madrid August 25 General Jose Sanjurjo a famed Spanish officer and commander was sentenced to death by a mixed civil and military tribunal after twenty hours deliberation for leading a rebellion against the republic. Rival factions staged demonstrations as authorities restrained them. General Herranz and Lieutenant-Colonel Infante received 12 to 20 year terms. Sanjurjo’s son Justo was freed.
Miss Dorothy Williams, a switchboard operator at Hotel Virginia, returns from her New Orleans trip praising the sights. The column relays a false tale about her in Gretna and recounts a 1922 liquor raid in Catahoula parish amid flood chaos. Dick Reynolds Jr says he believes his brother Smith Reynolds was murdered but will leave the case to regular authorities. Tokyo reports Baron Uchida declared Japan will recognize Manchukuo, the new Manchu state, to stabilize Manchuria and secure peace in the Far East. He said the League’s peace machinery offers no remedy for China's chaos and criticized international “dogma” in dealing with China.
E B Naylor mechanical superintendent of the News Star and Morning World came home after a two week vacation that covered Memphis Murfreesboro and Chattanooga. The trip spanned about 1200 miles and yielded a single nail that punctured his rear tire. His family remains in Memphis while he returns alone to the city.
Police identified a dying hotel guest in New Orleans as Dave R. Ettinger a 35 year old Chicago optical company official who had been kidnapped from Chicago and registered with aliases A N Sanderson and A J Blair. A doctor said Ettinger died before aid could help and a bank book showed a $1000 withdrawal from Bowery Bank New York three days earlier.
Louisiana Digest dedicates major space to Monroe Ouachita parish with full page photo of John M. Breard president of the Police Jury Association and Ouachita parish jury. Inside covers feature Breard and other executives, while page 12 highlights Ouachita parish resources industries and a group photo with a 1931 assessed value of 62 894 249 dollars.
A Caldwell parish charge of harboring a criminal was filed against James Chili Pace of West Monroe for aiding escapee Jim Yarrell and involvement in the Olla State Bank robbery. Pace was arrested in West Monroe and later jailed for Caldwell parish officers, with related arrests of Lannie Dortch and Walter Owens connected to the same case.
Amelia Earhart Putnam became the first woman to complete a non stop trans continental flight with a 19 hour 4 minute flight from Los Angeles to Newark and a 2435 mile airline distance. She set a women’s duration record and distance mark surpassing 2000 miles.
Wiley Shamblin, a prominent cotton buyer from northeast Louisiana, died at 7:30 PM at his Holly Ridge home from heart failure. Surviving are five sons, a daughter, his second wife Miss Bessie Foy, two sisters, a brother, and his church and lodge memberships. Funeral held at his residence with burial near Delhi.
A. A. Maught arrived in Monroe to work with John M. Breard on surveys across 13 of 14 parishes. The effort will determine parish needs and guide disbursement from a relief fund borrowed from the Reconstruction Finance Corporation. Reports must be certified and sent to the state committee in New Orleans before funding.
W K Anders of Montgomery Ward reports August sales far bigger than recent months across 575 stores. He says the chain prepares for the biggest fall sales in years as the local store orders 400000 four page circulars from Monroe Printing.
Lieutenant R. P. Rutledge and Sergeant O. B. Simmons of the U.S. Marine Corps died in an airplane crash above the site where three other Marine fliers are down in the jungle. The bodies will be taken to Bluefields by boat and then airlifted to Managua.
Mark W. Stroud, official classer for the Louisiana Cotton Cooperative, reports guidance on handling this year’s cotton and notes prices strengthening above eight cents under the immediate fixation plan. Monroe expects continued rise could spur a return to prosperity in three months. Futures show May 9.5, July 9.6, October 8.44, December 8.69.
Fire in a three story McDermott Surgical Instrument company building in downtown New Orleans caused about 42 000 dollars in damage before control. Adjacent properties suffered only a few hundred dollars. The origin was not determined. The address is 734 Poydras Street and instruments valued at 30 000 dollars were lost.
About 15 000 striking miners and families attempted to invade Franklin to picket coal mines. A force of roughly 600 deputies fired and used clubs ending the nine mile caravan assault. Nearly a hundred suffered injuries and several vehicles were damaged as marchers fled toward the county line.
Chicago August 25 A 6 o'clock bulletin reports Mrs Edith Rockefeller McCormick suffers a serious relapse in an incurable illness. Family members and all three children, plus her divorced husband Harold McCormick, are at her bedside as brother John D Rockefeller Jr visited last week.
Baton Rouge Aug 25 The state board of education left unacted on destruction of state school books while local officials and the state department follow a formal procedure. Walter Burke urged a definite plan for book destruction noting Tangipahoa parish criticism. Superintendent T H Harris said destruction was exaggerated and that texts were discarded as unfit, with proper records kept.
