Labor march leaves Staunton for Illinois coal fields

A four mile long motor caravan carrying striking miners left Staunton Illinois aiming to sway workers against the new five dollar wage scale in southern Illinois. Organizers predicted the protest could draw up to 25 000 people and camp at Dowell overnight.

Attempt to burn Seville US consulate in Seville Spain

Unidentified persons tried to ignite the American consulate in Seville during the night. The fire was caught early and extinguished with only minor damage. the arsonists’ identities are unknown but officials suspect communists. The building houses valuable furniture and serves as former Seville exposition HQ.

Chaplin Moves Against Sons Pursuing Film Careers

Charles Chaplin plans to seek court action to stop his two young sons Charles Jr and Sidney from starting in films without his consent. His lawyer said a petition may be filed to challenge wife Liza Grey Chaplin’s custody contract that allows the boys to appear in Fox Pictures projects. Chaplin believes the boys are too young for a movie career and should wait for normal childhood development.

Planes In Air Derby Fly Over City In Morning

J H Hayes of Ponca City led 26 fliers into Shreveport as the Cord air derby entered the city en route from Jackson Miss to the national air races in Cleveland. Crowds watched planes pass Monroe between 11 05 and 11 30 this morning.

More Counties May Join Farm Strike in Nebraska

Norfolk farmer E. J. Way said two more northeast Nebraska counties would be organized Friday to join the farmers strike movement. In Des Moines two midwest strike gains were reported with milk prices rising. Omaha milk officials agreed to pay $2 per hundredweight, Lincoln dealers $1.80, and over 1,000 farmers gathered along highways into Omaha amid transport interference.

Rolleigh Family Reunion Honors Monroe Pioneer Music Dealer

E C Rolleigh born 1866 Bastrop opened Monroe’s first music store in 1888. He marks his sixty sixth birthday as family members travel from Shreveport Camden Arkansas and local kin gather for a camp barbecue hosted by son-in-law W J Riley. Rolleigh has four grown children and fourteen grandchildren.

Brothers Sought in Slaying of Mobile Realtor

Police traced Raymond and Sam Dyson, sons of Marmaduke Dyson of Fairhope, in Mobile homicide case. H. M. Butler Jr., prominent realtor, was beaten and strangled after luring him to a hotel room. The Dyson brothers fled. Baldwin and Mobile authorities search for them as murder charges loom.

Cotton freight rates cut by Interstate Commerce Commission

The Interstate Commerce Commission ordered lower cotton freight rates with new carload based pricing. Rates from Arkansas Missouri and Western Louisiana to New England and Canada drop from 45 to 30 cents per 60 000 pounds, effective August 27 from some points and September 6 from others. The inland waterways plan to follow with federal barge lines, after a June inquiry. Some large shippers and Mississippi river barge lines opposed the changes.

Broussard speaks on Jadwin plan in Bastrop

In Bastrop Louisiana Senator Edwin S. Broussard on the courthouse square reiterated support for the Jadwin Flood Control plan. He said his role on the senate sub committee to revise Jadwin would help secure payment to landowners and hinted he would be named chairman if Roosevelt won the presidency. He mocked floor speeches that he said only attracted attention and front pages, arguing they hamper Senate work.

Suit Aims Insurance Payout After Calhoun Slaying

In Ouachita parish district court, heirs of David Franklin Avant seek $5,000 from Mutual Benefit Health and Accident Association of Omaha claiming accidental death coverage. Avant was slain at his Calhoun store on May 27, 1932. the policy named Susan K. Avant, his mother, as beneficiary, who died earlier.

New Grandstand Planned at Ouachita Junior College

Plans for a permanent cypress grandstand at Ouachita Junior College call for 180 feet in length and 18 tiers with 30 boxes. Bids open September 1 in the Supt T O Browns office. The 4 502 seat facility aims to host the October 15 L S A and Mississippi Agricultural College football game attracting about 7000 spectators.

Police and relatives hunted for Cicero A. Ramsey a local real estate firm president and Baptist churchman who vanished after sending a despondent note to his wife. A reference to Canal street and the river prompted night patrols along the Mississippi levees. he was seen leaving his downtown office hatless earlier that morning. Ramsey had recent ill health and had lived in New Orleans for 35 years after coming from Atlanta.

Jackson Aug 24 Incumbents held early leads in most Mississippi congressional districts as yesterday’s Democratic primary returns favored incumbents in districts one four and five with incomplete results.
