Van Meter slain by police ends Dillinger gang chase
Homer Van Meter, longtime Dillinger ally, was killed by four officers led by Chief Frank Cullen in downtown St Paul after a gun battle. The pursuit, kept secret for weeks, spanned Milwaukee and Wisconsin as officers closed in on his hideouts. The gangster, linked to bank raids and escapes with Dillinger, died with a straw hat in hand as witnesses described the dramatic capture.
