In separate incidents on a Tuesday night in Brooklyn two youths were killed. Frank Manacherio, 19, was shot in Bath Beach after an argument with youths in a blue sedan. Shel don Willis, 18, was killed by a rooftop sniper in Bedford Stuyvesant after being stopped by a territorial group. Police arrested four Stompers gang members hours later. Willis belonged to the Hellburners.
In Haifa a group of about 25 Jewish youths abducted around 25 youngsters from a children’s center claiming to save them from exposure to pork and a nonreligious life. Police rounded up many raiders and a search for the children began. Leader Menachem Porush blamed Youth Aliyah for moving children from religious homes to nonreligious settings.
Police and volunteers hunted the final gunman in a trio linked to a fatal officer shooting in central Wisconsin. William Welter, 23, of Chicago, was captured after an officer forced a weapon into his mouth. Patrolman James Jantz, 26, was killed and Lake Delton Police Chief Robert Kohl, 45, wounded in the incident.
President Kennedy monitors reports of new East Berlin travel limits as aides study dispatches and consult Western allies. A Western Big Four group plans to meet at the State Department to discuss German issue and potential negotiation with the Soviets.
