A tropical storm battering the eastern seaboard left nine dead and about twenty missing in New Jersey and nearby shores. Heavy rains and high tides flooded roads and tracks as coast guards warned of weakened seawalls and ships capsized.
A fierce whip gale driven by tropical winds battered the eastern seaboard from Bermuda toward New Jersey. Rain and crashing seas sank boats and capsized craft, with at least nine dead and many still missing. Atlantic City logged 2.25 inches of rain in an hour as coast guards battled the storm off Cape May and Ocean City.

Oklahoma City prepares for a grand jury as government agents brace for rapid trial after indictments in the Urschel kidnapping case. Guards with sub machine guns will protect witnesses and jurors as prosecutors consider bringing Harvey Bailey to stand trial in Oklahoma or Kansas City for related offenses.
In St Louis the sleeping sickness outbreak reaches its peak with 15 deaths and 149 cases. Dr J P Leake of the U S Public Health Service calls it the most serious in the nation yet warns against panic. He notes the danger is real but not plague proportions.
HUNTSVILLE ALA Aug 22 Sheriff Ben F Giles of Madison county stopped a 40 man mob from seizing Thomas Brown a Black man held for the assault of a white woman in Decatur He moved Brown to safety after the group gathered to take him from custody and fled when challenged by deputies.
The News Star World lists two new entrants from Monroe and Bastrop districts in the Century of Progress trip contest. District 1 entries include Jerry Adams Myra Batten Miss Bill Brennan Mildred Buttita Joseph Ditto among others as six free trips are awarded to the Chicago exposition.
The forty fifth installment examines R L Engerran the labor commissioner in Louisiana and the clash with organized labor over his non card status The piece notes Long pledged to appoint union men yet Engerran faced opposition from labor groups and a dispute reaching the American Federation of Labor amid broad state tensions.

Mergers liquidations and holiday closures reduced counts, but officials believe the structure now on a sounder basis aiding insurance plan prospects.
Pine Bluff Arkansas August 22 1940 14 players on the Pine Bluff Dixie Baseball League team refused to travel for a game with Tyler Texas after failing to receive salary checks. Club officials disbanded the team effective immediately with Buddy Tanner as manager.
Poona India August 22 The Mahatma Gandhi grew weaker during his seventh day without food Tuesday but the legislative council was told his condition had not yet become critical.
The Louisiana Tax Reform Commission reports staggering state, parish, and district indebtedness totaling 307.9 million dollars excluding most municipal obligations. It lists defaults across 47 parishes and proposes three constitutional amendments to relieve property taxpayers while noting possible early special session to consider bond and road financing reforms.
New Orleans district attorney announces recounts will proceed daily after a miscount was found in the first box of the constitutional amendment election. The 12th precinct 17th ward recounted 143 yes and 76 no for amendment No. 5 versus 217 yes and 16 no officially. The amendment would fund a 5 million dollar bond for state debt payments.
In Jackson Mississippi an association of Mississippi and Louisiana tobacco dealers will be formed at a convention on Thursday. Claude Harrison of Monroe Louisiana will preside over the meeting which is expected to attract many dealers from both states.
A tobacco truck carrying twelve Deep Run men and boys collided with a Seaboard Airlines train near Lumberton North Carolina killing seven instantly and injuring five. Driver Haywood Smith said his view was blocked by a house and he did not see the train approaching.
E C Palmour 60 a Gainesville businessman and his 84 year old mother in law were shot in their sleep by Palmour’s wife 58 who then killed herself Investigation found she was in ill health and a note indicated planned disposition of the bodies Palmour was shot in the temple.
