Lightning Kills Soldier at Camp Beauregard
Alexandria August 20 during a rainstorm at Camp Beauregard Private John W Weaver 25 of Company A Division Battalion was struck by lightning and killed instantly. He lived at Gamble Mines Alabama and is survived by his father J T Weaver. The body will be shipped home for burial. Several other soldiers were shocked but not seriously injured.

Deserters From Army Captured After Chase on Ouachita
Two deserters from the Black Brigade tried to flee to familiar ground but were apprehended by Monroe police after crossing the Ouachita. One gave the name Ebert Shears, the other Wade Hollis, later found as Wade S. Hollis. Officers Perry Stevens Lanier Platt pursued them. both tried to discard evidence, one rolling down a river bank. All men born on or before August 24 1897 must register with the Ouachita Local Board. Lightning destroys barns on Killoden plantation
During a Tuesday storm between two and three o'clock lightning struck Killoden plantation in the Colony near Sicard destroying two barns. One barn was nearly empty while the larger held hay corn and a mule totaling likely a substantial loss. The owner RE Fudicar with manager W W Curtis was absent investigating.
