A commission government question is to be submitted to qualified voters tomorrow. The measure asks voters to decide on adopting a commission form of government and related procedural changes. Local officials urge participation and outline the potential implications for city governance.
Allied units repulsed heavy enemy assaults and inflicted large casualties as air and ground operations continued. The foe failed to withstand ongoing hammering by Allied fighters supported by forward air and artillery.
Allied troops report capturing 2200 Germans and driving the enemy back on a ten mile front. British actions at Norris Ridge yield 500+ prisoners and a ridge securement, while French forces between the Oise and Aisne claim 1700 prisoners, two battalion commanders among them, as Nouvron Cingre falls and front positions shift toward Fontenoy and Ribecourt.
J R Jones of Archibald La dies after his car is struck by an extra V S P train at Girard La. Five others including his wife and two children W H Brown of Alto and J E Box of Girard are hospitalized in St Francis Sanitarium with varying injuries. The wreck occurred while the caboose crew were recovering a derailed east bound No 2. Mrs Jones seeks damages from the railroad.
Paris dispatch reports the French tenth army driving German lines between the Oise and Aisne. The French penetrated up to two miles into enemy positions amid heavy resistance from machine gunners and active German air operations. St Mardle Troit near Roye was seized, and the French captured Bouvraignes three quarters of a mile farther south.
London reports French forces penetrated in the village of Le Hamel west of Oise and northwest of Ribecourt. During fighting today the French won slight headway against stubborn German units between Lassigny and Oise.
Washington Aug 19 The new man power bill extending the draft ages will be taken up in the Senate next Thursday. With a quorum present the chamber set aside the vacation recess until Aug 24 and cleared the way for action without further delay.
Beaumont Texas August 18 an explosion of a car of gasoline on the Georgia Carolina and Southern Florida Railway at Harrington wrecked about a dozen freight cars and caused two deaths and 38 injuries. Conductor Harry S Johnson age 33 and Conductor Barker of Silsbee were killed and wounded died hours after the blast 3 10 am Sunday. The ignition method remains unknown.
Information from the sanitarium states that Dr. Smith is much better today and on the road to recovery. Friends hopeful for his speedy return to health.
West Monroe citizens are notified that after completing the Filtration Plant at higher costs, the city will discontinue all water and light services for unpaid accounts starting Wednesday August 21. Reinstatement charges one dollar. Mayor N G Tippitt.
The Ouachita Agricultural Fair Association voted to hold the fair October 22 through 25 with an agricultural focus. Prizes include cash and War Savings Stamps. King Coraes is featured and racing is dropped. City officials discuss funding a new water filtration plant and street improvements in Monroe.
The Norwegian bark Nordhay was sunk by a German submarine about 125 miles off the Virginia capes Saturday. The crew were landed.
Washington reports casualty figures from the American Expeditionary Forces showing deaths by disease and accidents, missing in action, wounded severely, and other categories. The release also lists names of soldiers on the casualty list.
