Five Scottsboro defendants seek state clemency
In Alabama on August 16 five Scottsboro defendants asked Governor Bibb Graves and the state pardon board for clemency. They have sat in various prisons since March 1931 when two white women accused them and four others of mass rape. Four face long terms for raping Victoria Price. the second plaintiff later repudiated her charge. A fifth man serves two years for assaulting a deputy during an escape.
