European powers stay vigilant as Germany readies nationwide maneuvers amid fears of crisis over Czechoslovakia. Berlin releases seek to quell suspicion while officials warn Britons travelling in Germany to avoid trouble during the upcoming exercises.
Uncle Sam via the Agricultural Adjustment Administration will pay Louisiana cotton producers 77 690 dollars for C 5 I certificates known as brownies from the first AAA pool begun in 1933. Certificates cover about 77 600 bales and are bought at one dollar per bale.
Port Arthur Texas August 13 A L Roy Gillman volunteered to bring a federal test case challenging the Louisiana legislature extending the state boundary 27 miles gulfward. A $2 fishing license fee takes effect on East Jetty and adjacent waters under the act. Gillman said he would spend time and money to test the provision.
The United States Weather Bureau reports a small tropical storm about 400 miles south of New Orleans moving west-northwest at 18 mph. Small craft are advised to avoid the gulf from Pensacola to Brownsville until further notice as the stormcenter remains over a limited area with hurricane-force winds near its core. The coast guard dispatched the 2,000 ton cutter Sara to monitor the storm’s course.
In Thomaston Maine prisoner No. 6907 Francis M. Carroll age 43 received a natural life term for the murder of Dr. James G. Littlefield 67. He was housed in the same cell block as Paul N. Dwyer 19 who pleaded guilty to garroting the doctor and testified Carroll committed the crime.
John P. Frey of the AFL asserts the Communist party controls CIO unions and uses sit-down strikes and mass picketing as a training ground for future revolution. He says 280 Party members are or were on CIO payrolls and argues the movement aims to Moscow and the third international.
Arkansas and Oklahoma officers with bloodhounds pursued Floyd Hamilton and Ted Walters after a car chase near King Arkansas. The fugitives leaped from a bridge into a stream and escaped into thick brush amid a border-area manhunt following a Nashville Arkansas bottle company robbery of $10.
In Cincinnati on August 13 a holdup man grabbed Fred Wong's car and ordered him to move. The light stayed red, Wong refused to drive, the robber struck him with a gun, and police soon captured the attacker while praising Wong for not running the signal. Wong said he feared arrest for disobeying the light.
The missing Compañia Mexicana de Aviacion airliner with 11 aboard was sighted in a mountain gorge near the Tlacotalpam area in Vera Cruz. Ground teams moved toward the crash site as officials said all aboard were believed dead, including one passenger listed as Eugene Carlson.
Adjutant general Ray Fleming says Louisiana units were enthusiastic about the third Army maneuvers but the war games proved a hardship for most. He urges better rest and bathing facilities next time. Only two men hospitalized with malaria and epidemic illness. They evacuated 27,000 officers and men by 44 special trains and 1,900 army trucks. 16 men remained in Biloxi hospital.
