Mr and Mrs Travis Oliver Sr return from a honeymoon in Alaska. They toured Anchorage by air and car, noting a population around 50 000 in the area and 15 000 soldiers stationed there. Prices surprised them including a $2 50 haircut vs Seattle at $1 50. They praised scenery and the voyage home by steamer.
Florence Chadwick the noted channel swimmer announced Thursday night in Seattle that she has broken her engagement to F Wallace Taber explorer and lecturer.
Roy McCann a 40 year old Fairbanks chemist died from a fractured skull and brain injury in a Wednesday automobile crash at the Airport road and First street intersection near Selman Field. Investigators delay the probe awaiting Mrs. J O Willett’s hospital release while driver Elton F Gunn is reported injured and released. Funeral services were held at Alabama Presbyterian Church in Sibley. McCann is survived by Elva Pennwell McCann Rev J C McCann and two sisters Estelle Hammons and Betty Jean Leslie.
U S Senator Allen J. Ellender of Houma Louisiana addressed the 33rd national convention of the Disabled American Veterans in Miami Beach Florida August 15 to 21. He cited adequate hospitalization increased vocational rehabilitation and public awareness of disabled veterans as vital. He urged maximum use of rehabilitation and recognition of the roles disabled veterans can still play for national and personal benefit.
Chang Moon Bek of Korea, summer visitor to Nelson Bend near here, stays with Col. and Mrs. Tom Gunby. Bek, a student at Vanderbilt University engineering school, met Col. Gunby during World War II posting in Korea.
Robbers entered the Ft Meade branch, forced two women clerks and two men into the vault, escaped with about $160000. Police and FBI widened roadblocks as guards were not present and alarms were absent. Several earlier base bank robberies are noted, including Ft Meade incidents in 1953.
Rep Harrison A Williams Jr announced he would introduce the Senate bill in the House Monday. He said it would strike a death blow to the few traitors in our midst and prevent self seeking politicians from accusing anybody who disagrees with them of being Communists.
A car driver named Ford was found dead with a long hunting knife stuck in the seat. His wallet was missing and the knife sheath lay near the water. No blood or bruises were found, and authorities noted no signs of a struggle.
Walter C. Johnson, secretary manager of the Southern Newspaper Publishers Association, will retire from the association on November 8 after 50 years of service. He will resign at the SNPA convention in Boca Raton, Florida, where a successor will be elected. Johnson, from Chattanooga, expresses mixed feelings and looks forward to rest and recreation.
The Union Parish police jury awarded the building contract to H t C Peck Lumber Co of Sicily for 37050 dollars including air conditioning. Lincoln Buildings Ruston bid 38565 and Ronnie Terral 37845. Completion expected by January 1 with funds from federal allocation two thirds and local taxes.
Ruston notes Lloyd Neeles has been officially named the general sanitarian to assist H. W. Allen, Lincoln Parish sanitarian, after months of aiding. The appointment was announced locally.
Revenue Service Representatives Attend Meeting. T. R. Shackelford and Mrs. Mary E. Goza attended a three day conference at the New Orleans district office called by Chester A. Usry director of internal revenue for Louisiana. The session aimed to implement a new accounting procedure aligning with a nationwide policy to decentralize the bureau. Usry said the change would speed payments and improve public service. The meeting also covered plans to enhance the education program for better public understanding.
The official proposed depositories for check clearances would be established in Baton Rouge and Shreveport, expanding the bureau of internal revenue services beyond the existing New Orleans custom house office to speed tax processing.

The Vicksburg district corps of engineers considers Atlantic Refining Company Dallas Texas request to approve plans for a subaqueous pipeline crossing of Bayou Macon in Mississippi.
Maj. Christopher Draper a 62 year old English flyer who threaded a small plane under 15 Thames bridges last year says he would welcome an invitation to Texas to meet Gene Thompson the 25 year old Texan who flew under two London bridges on impulse During remarks Draper praised Thompsons survival and noted likely celebrations upon his return home in Lubbock Texas and his desire to meet the young man who he calls crackers.
Plans show a four inch natural gas pipeline to be placed at a minimum depth of four feet below the bed and side slopes of a stream crossing in Madison and Franklin parishes. The proposed route lies about 13 miles east of Baskin and 62.2 miles upstream from the stream mouth.
