A large Jackson crowd gathered to honor Mkooippi and Victor Vardaman in a public demonstration. The event highlighted support for the two figures and drew regional attention for their roles in local affairs.
In Jackson Mississippi on August 8 James K Vardaman newly elected U S senator declared he would keep Mississippi in the hands of white people and denounced predatory wealth and corporate power He spoke at a reception for Vardaman Bilbo and other state candidates as a crowd of thousands filled streets and a reviewing stand at the state capitol
The crowd celebrated the man chosen by more than 70,000 voters to serve in national councils. An elderly resident called it the greatest demonstration in years as 6,000 slept in the streets awaiting trains that night in four directions.
In Chicago and Washington reports an American mining man H D Bradfield of Mexico says conditions in Mexico worsen and a San Antonio meeting of Mexican mining men will coordinate action to protect American property. A separate Chicago blast at Victor Jenson Electric Supply Company injures none and points to possible labor union involvement as investigators search for two unknown men. President Taft signs the reapportionment bill increasing House seats to 433 pending Arizona and New Mexico statehood with a March 1912 start.
At the Hopewell church ten miles north of Alexandria Joe Stilley, a farmer, was shot dead in his seat during services. His wife was dangerously wounded and his mother slightly wounded when buckshot slammed through a church window. A shot was fired after services and no assassin was found. Stilley had been jailed for hog and cattle theft, linking the attack to local trouble. The wife was taken to a sanitarium.
Detroit Michigan hosts the International Apple Shippers Association convention with many visitors arriving from across the United States and Canada. Sessions begin tomorrow and run for three days.
Dr Frank Collins and Julia A Spence married last night at 8 at the DeLand residence on South Grand street. Rev J A H Wharton of First Baptist officiated with a small group of intimate friends present. The couple will reside at Breard and Sixth streets.
George W. Perkins testifies before the Steel Corporation Investigating Committee about a March 1902 proposal to redeem 200 million in preferred stock with 250 million in bonds and to raise 50 million in new money without corporate cost. He notes savings from replacing preferred stock with bonds and cites prior expenditures on improvements and Rockefeller properties. The inquiry also pressed him on campaign contributions as the committee remains dead-locked on questions of his involvement.
In Rome on August 8 the Pope's physicians announced that Pope Pius X remains in satisfactory condition and continues his recovery with no new complications reported.
