U S government figures show July unemployment at 5.5 percent with 83.4 million employed. Wholesale prices climbed sharply, the largest advance in five months, driven by food costs and industrial raw materials.
Carlos G. Spaht of Baton Rouge was chosen chairman of the LSU board of supervisors, succeeding James T. Staples whose term ended. The vote followed a secret premeeting huddle, and the board also elected William S. Peck Jr. as vice chairman and William T. Brown as secretary.

Voters planning to be away should request an absentee ballot. The Clerk of Court’s office notes absentee voting is available through August 12 for those out of the parish.
South Vietnamese forces reported victories north of Quang Tri and at An Loc as Highway 13 opening efforts near success. US reports 240 North Vietnamese strikes, mostly on bridges and oil depots north of the DMZ. Marines fight near Quang Tri City and Hue is hit by rockets as battle logistics and heavy artillery shape the frontline.
Mr and Mrs Marti Cook of West Monroe welcome their first child Scott Allen born Thursday at Glenwood Hospital. Grandparents are Henry A Cook and J W Jackson of West Monroe and Monroe respectively.

Gem L. Poe an Air Force sergeant, 31, was struck while cutting limbs from a tree in the country. He was knocked to the ground, his boots burned, and his body hair singed with red streaks. He recovered quickly and returned to work with medical tests ordered by Flight Surgeon Col. George Frimpter. His wife Mary Louise aided him and helped call for transport after the event on July 22.
Twenty state legislators form a new political force named Democratic Officials to Work to Re elect President Nixon. In Louisiana 6 senators and 14 representatives join, led by Rep. John J. Hainkel Jr., praising Nixon’s foreign policy and inflation efforts.
The Communications Workers of America AFLCIO endorsed Sen George McGovern for president urging a shift from AFL CIO neutrality. Beirne said neutrality equals backing Nixon and criticized the Nixon administration as a rerun of Hoover while noting the union represents about 550 000 telecom and communications workers. He said the union may withhold funds from AFL CIO political action.
The forecast calls for partly cloudy skies and warm temperatures with highs in the lower 90s and lows around the lower 70s. A 39 percent chance of thundershowers persists today and Saturday mainly in afternoons and evenings. Winds will be southerly at 5 to 15 mph. Local statewide temps are similar. The Thursday Monroe high reached 93 with a 71 low and no rainfall reported.
Arthur H. Bremer was found sane by a jury and convicted today on all charges arising from the shooting of Alabama Governor George C. Wallace and three other persons in an Upper Marlboro Maryland courtroom.
Jurors began deliberations in the Arthur H. Bremer case after four days of testimony. The defense labeled him schizophrenic while the prosecution urged full sanity. Judge Powers instructed on mental disorder standards and potential penalties for remaining charges.

In Reykjavik Boris Spassky resigns after 56 moves to challenger Bobby Fischer, giving Fischer a commanding lead 6 1 4 4 to 3 4 4. The adjourned game resumed after Thursday night, with Fischer poised to capture the championship as the match can extend to 24 games.
New York UPI reports the National Weather Service record the day’s peak temperature at Blythe California reaching 110 degrees excluding Alaska and Hawaii The day’s low dropped to 35 at Hibbing Minnesota indicating wide temperature extremes across the country.
The Monroe Government Center unveils a 360 by 150 foot parking lot for about 100 cars beside the city court building. Bentz & Elmore Co. built it under Contract X-61 at roughly 24400 dollars, replacing grass parking along I 20 and tied to a land swap with the state.
Hydrological bulletin records rising stage at Camden and Monroe stations with measured increases in stage heights and a slight fall at another site. Reports indicate changes across multiple stations along the river.

A 5.8 magnitude earthquake struck the Sitka area 70 miles to the southwest early today, recorded by the Palmer Alaska observatory. No tsunami was generated and there were no reports of damage.
