The Polish aviators Idzikowski and Kubala appeared to abandon their trans ocean crossing. reports at 9:40 p m and midnight indicated they had turned back and were unreported at noon eastern daylight time today.
The diary notes from Le Bourget France track a Polish air crew leaving for New York. Updates report the plane sighted near Dreuk 60 miles from Paris at 12:38 a m and later seen 200 miles north of the Azores by the Aztec steamer. The Amakura reports position 259 miles northeast of Aztec’s report as the fliers reportedly head back toward Europe.

Louisiana's first bale of cotton from the 1928 crop sold at auction in New Orleans for 36 cents a pound. The 543 pound bale came from Cameron parish farmer W. H. Carter and arrived 13 days after the 1927 bale. Purchaser: Anderson, Clayton and Company of Houston, Texas.

Mrs. Oscar Day, charged with manslaughter in the death of Mrs. Ira Medlin after a roadside duel eight miles north of Farmerville, was released on a 1500 dollar bond. Mrs. Medlin’s funeral was held in Marion, Louisiana.
In Haynesville Louisiana a citizen committee launches a broad subscription to fund Dr Oscar Dowling head of the state board of health in defending against Gov Huey P Long’s plan to remove him from office effective August 15. The effort invites contributions from Dowling’s friends across the state.
The Republican National Committee reported $98 379 in contributions through July 31 and expenditures of $48 317.04. Treasurer J R Nutt released the figures in line with the Kansas City platform pledge with copies sent to the Senate and House campaign funds committees. Stanford California reports Herbert Hoover finished drafting a formal acceptance speech for the presidential nomination. Boise Idaho Senator Borah urged both parties to limit campaign expenditures to 3 million dollars each. Richmond Virginia Bishop James Cannon Jr announced anti Smith conferences in the South.
Russell Beitzel, once a Philadelphia man of affairs, is charged with the murder of Barbara Mauger a 19 year old Philadelphia girl found dead in Hollywood hills. The body bore a platinum wedding ring and had been dead over a month. Beitzel confessed to a relationship with Mauger and to stealing $300 from a Philadelphia dry goods safe.
John Henry Craig a 19 year old negro from Morehouse parish is held in Bastrop parish jail on a charge of attempting criminal assault. A white girl, said to be 12, says Craig verbally accosted her after approaching near Beekman. He admits proposing but says he did not intend harm and that the girl rode away.

New York Aug 4 A graphic radio account from Captain Frank H Claret of the liner Minnewaska details rescuing Captain Frank T Courtney and the Whale crew after their seaplane burned and ditched about 600 miles west of the Azores. The Minnewaska searched 341 miles off course and picked up survivors at 6 44 p m after finding an exhausted crew and a burned engine room plane.
