Walter Jones was found guilty by a Montgomery County jury for the murder of Sloan Rowan and sentenced to die by hanging. He is noted as the second white man to be sentenced to hang there since the Civil War.
New York August 2: "Whity Jack" Lewis, one of four men accused in the Rosenthal gambling murder, underwent a third degree interrogation. Prosecutors seek corroboration of confessions by "Bald Jack" Rose "Harry Vallon" and "Bridgie" Webber. Lewis arrived today from Fleischmans New York where he was arrested yesterday.

New Orleans August 2 cotton rose 11 to 13 points after the government condition report. Immediately after the release a rise of one dollar per bale followed. Mr. J O Heath of New York Life Insurance with offices in Shreveport is in Monroe on business.

Other results include Felix W Moore defeating H N Cate for Civil Appeals judge and Finis J Garrett winning the Ninth District Democratic nomination. Delegates were chosen for the August 15 state convention to draft a platform.
Four men employed by Choctaw Lumber Co. were killed instantly when a lightning bolt struck a tree in a timber tract near Eagletown Okla while they sheltered from a storm. Six others under a nearby tree were knocked down. Names include Will Brown and John Brown of Eagletown and Henry Smith and Patrick Herring of Broken Bow. A separate fatal lightning strike burned Arthur Powell in a barn near Effie Franklin County.
Atlanta Aug. 2 The Georgia House failed to override Governor Brown's veto on the Alexander-Tippins bill saving near beer saloons. The bill would have prohibited sale of any beverage containing more than one percent alcohol.
After the I S A Summer Normal closing exercises in Baton Rouge Principal Hughes urged all principals and teachers to stay after dismissal. About 25 to 30 gathered in the hall voicing strong disapproval of the State Board of Education removing L J Alleman as institute conductor. A five member committee was authorized to draft resolutions expressing the disapproval.
Fred Grace registrar of the State Land Office travels from Baton Rouge to North Louisiana to inspect lands in Webster and Bossier parishes. He reports to Governor Hall on conditions and basis for leasing mineral rights as authorized by recent General Assembly action. The governor previously ordered lands withdrawn to curb speculators.
Juliette Ryan, eighteen, died at Charity Hospital after the West End Shell Road collision with a motorcycle and car. She died after hours of unconsciousness. E. J. Larkin had previously succumbed to injuries. Police hunt vandals linked to damage near Margaret Place where three fingers were broken from the statue of Margaret.
Coelonens Louisiana August 2 A H Garland state representative and relative of Colleretsmin H Garland Dupre has been missing since the legislature adjourned in Baton Rouge on July 12. He left the capital that day likely for home and has not been heard from since. His family is at a loss to explain the absence.
