Spaceport grows on Merritt Island as bulldozers move in
Cape Canaveral area expands for NASA spaceport with 87 000 acres on Merritt Island and a 15 000 acre Cape plot. Over 5 000 construction workers now, rising to about 9 000 in 12 months, with $1.7 billion in three years. Launch Complex 39 will host three Saturn 5 pads for Apollo missions, steel giants towering 36 stories high. The project displaces about 400 homeowners as land is cleared for rails causeways and Titan 3 and Gemini launches. Estimated Cape Canaveral payroll reaches 225 million in 1966 as work continues through 1965.
