Rampaging Buddhist youths attacked three more Americans in Saigon, overturning a police jeep and tossing two grenades as anti-government violence continued. Earlier a group dragged an American civilian from a taxi by the Buddhist Institute and beat him, amid escalating unrest in the capital.
U S troops report fresh Viet Cong losses as operations in the Chu Phon Mountains north of Saigon tally 628 killed and airmobile forces press the front. Navy and Air Force pilots strike Viet Cong supply routes near Da Nang and along the 11th Parallel. A Viet Cong outpost south of Saigon is attacked by government forces amid tense antiwar demonstrations in Saigon.
President Johnson said he would urge Congress to raise all Social Security benefits and to consider extending some Medicare type benefits next year. He spoke in San Antonio, outlining plans to expand federal support for retirees and disabled Americans.
A massive fire engulfed the Viking Princess, with about 470 rescued and 15 confirmed dead or missing. Coast Guard and Navy units searched a 20 mile area as survivors were moved to Guantanamo Bay or Miami. The 536 foot vessel carried 235 passengers and a crew around 248 to 260.
Christians observed Good Friday with services worldwide as pilgrims streamed to Rome and the Holy Land for rites marking Christ’s crucifixion. Pope Paul VI led a mass in Rome while a torchlit procession traced Christ’s path to the cross at the Colosseum.
The Army will open training centers at Ft. Bragg North Carolina Ft. Campbell Kentucky and Fort Lewis Washington to speed Viet Nam buildup. 15 000 troops will be withdrawn from Europe and replaced by newly trained personnel by December increasing Army strength to 225 000.
LSU athletics chief James J. Corbett, 46, was found in a wrecked car with a chest wound and airlifted to Baptist General Hospital where surgeons removed a bullet from his back. Police say a weapon was not recovered, the incident remains under investigation, and Corbett’s condition is listed as fairly good after surgery and blood transfusions.
A gas line ruptured near a 15,000 gallon gasoline storage tank north of Baton Rouge, with deputies warning the main tank could explode at any time. Traffic on U.S. 61 was halted as gas spewed and the fire burned fiercely near the tank.

A 15 year old heiress Edith Angelia DeeDee Jenkins and Donald Collins 20 turned themselves in to San Diego police from Mission Beach after two weeks away. They traveled to Big Sur then to San Diego with Collins trading a hi fi for a pickup and deny threats, while the heiress mother Anita Jenkins says the inheritance is substantial. DeeDee is in juvenile custody after being held by authorities while Collins is in sheriff custody for questioning.
The Monroe area sees partly cloudy skies and cooler temperatures through Saturday. Highs reach 76 to 80 today, tonight 46 to 52, and Saturday’s highs 64 to 68. In the Twin Cities, Thursday reached 84 with a morning low of 54.
Al Davis head coach general manager of the Oakland Raiders was named AFL commissioner to succeed Joe Foss who resigned after six years. Davis, 36, rebuilt the Raiders to 10-4 and 9-3 prior seasons and helped spearhead a $30 million stadium project. Ralph D. Wilson announced the selection at a news conference. Milt Woodard became acting commissioner but declined the permanent post.
Liberian government orders Edward Park of USAID to depart within four days for making derogatory remarks about Liberia and its leaders. The note to the U S Embassy cites a hit and run incident in which a girl was hurt.
