J Washington April 7 The defense drive lifts the number of workers covered by social security by nearly 2.7 million in the last three months of 1940 from 1939. Total workers reached 31,017,000 in Oct Dec compared with 29,200,000 and 28,400,000 in prior periods. Taxable payrolls for 1940 Q4 totaled about 8.0 billion dollars versus 8.138 billion in Q3 and 7.442 billion in Q4 1939.
