Ouachita Parish opens a new 1.2 million dollar junior high and elementary school on a 40 acre site in Monroe. A 650 pound bull elk led a herd released by vandals from Burnet Park Zoo pens in Syracuse. Police and SPCA joined a large roundup, with one elk shot, another dying from exhaustion, and a third cow elk escaping toward a swamp. Sheep goats and a raccoon were recovered.
Under secretary of State W Averell Harriman, in a recorded interview, said Khrushchev wants to reduce military spending to expand the Soviet civilian economy. Governor Ross Barnett ordered five Mississippi Coast night clubs to permanently stop gambling by sundown and warned of force if they failed to comply. The clubs Gay Paree Fiesta Club Key Club Sa When and The Spot Restaurant were named with telegrams from the governor directing immediate cessation and removal of gambling devices. All coast gambling was to cease.
