A gangster known as Dutch Schultz is shot by a rival and dies after uttering delirious last words recorded by police stenographers. The piece notes his conversion on death bed and references Theodore Roosevelt’s 77th birthday and Panama Canal legacy in a reflective closing.
W. L. Applin of Port Gibson, Mississippi, shot while attempting a robbery of Henry C. Mickie at 401 Breard Street. He is described as on the road to recovery with injuries including a wound below his right eye and minor wounds to his shoulder leg and hip. The ear function may remain clear and his eye could suffer partial permanent impairment. He is expected to be moved from St Francis sanitarium to parish jail within days.
Cecil Methvin and Robert Renfro, escaped from Louisiana state penitentiary, were captured near Ruston by Lincoln Parish Sheriff A. J. Thigpen and deputies. They were taken to the Angola penal farm to complete their return. Methvin and Renfro allegedly robbed a Coushatta resident of $40 on October 16, with Renfro possessing the pistol at arrest.

Early returns from about a dozen states show heavy support for continuing the AAA corn hog program in 1936. The count totals 14 292 in favor and 2 055 against, with AAA officials expressing pleasure at the trend despite earlier doubts.

Lucius Brown sustained minor injuries and was treated at Riverside sanitarium before release. Richard was held for coroner questioning as investigation continues. A second accident near DeSiard and Twenty third streets injured two youths with minor cuts and bruises.
Los Angeles October 26 The mountain fire sweeps across the Malibu area and Santa Monica range in its fifth day threatening Seminole Hot Springs and Malibu Lake homes. Fire forces estimate ten million dollars in damage since last Tuesday windstorm as 2009 CCC fighters, aided by local, state, and federal crews, push back a eastward advance toward Santa Monica and Beverly Hills. Zuma canyon near the beach also sees renewed danger to residences.
Abraham L. Shushan resigns as president of the Orleans levee board after being acquitted of tax evasion charges. He mails the letter to Governor O. K. Allen, who accepts the resignation effective immediately, saying he retires to private business.
Jackson Mississippi October 26 The house ways and means committee led by T G McCallum of Laurel will introduce a broad new tax plan designed to aid small farmers and small businesses. The proposal would exempt home and farm personal property, raise homestead exemptions to 2500 and land exemptions to 160 acres, cut ad valorem tax from five to four mills, and reduce state privilege taxes about 25 percent.
The Allen parish Democratic executive committee voted five to four to urge the parish board of election supervisors to appoint poll officials under prior state laws to ensure a fair January Democratic primary election in Lake Charles.
A large Alexandria crowd met Congressman Cleveland Dear as he unveiled his home rule campaign ticket. Dear attacked the state administration and vowed to restore constitutional government and repeal dictatorial laws affecting police juries municipalities and schools.
Reports from Port Au Prince and Jacmel indicate hundreds drowned in floods linked to last weekend’s hurricane. Unofficial tallies include 1500 dead in Jeremie and 200 bodies recovered in Jacmel as thousands are left homeless and starving. Aid efforts are underway while roads remain impassable. The same hurricane impacted eastern Cuba and Jamaica with significant damage and four deaths.
Memphis Tenn Oct 26 Oscar Johnson assistant secretary of the treasury and head of the governments cotton pool said the consensus of eastern constitutional lawyers is that processing taxes will be upheld and the Bankhead cotton allotment act declared unconstitutional. He noted the bounty plan has similar effect and could trigger another farmer vote if the court finds the act constitutional.
Albert Stern, 21, linked as the chief executor in the Schultz gang war, was found dead in Newark from gas poisoning and strangulation. Police called the death a possible suicide, hoping to advance the tavern massacre investigation. Stern left a note to a girl and left clues like bloodstained papers. Max Silverman was questioned after a meeting with Stern.
John Sims Evans, 30, a farmer from Lincoln Parish, was found shot on a rural road Friday night after returning home in a wagon from selling cotton. A coroner's jury met Saturday morning and adjourned without a verdict as authorities continue to investigate the ambush murder and gather evidence.
