In Flint Michigan on October 5 a man identified as Andrew Goodrich shouted that the Lord commanded him to kill. He struck 69 year old Mrs. J Odran with a table leg, then beat her as witnesses restrained him until police arrived. Esther Roberts 14 was with her. Mrs. Odran died at a hospital shortly after admission.
A Ouachita parish grand jury will meet at the courthouse Monday at 9 a.m. for the full term of district court to begin investigations of 150 criminal cases. It is expected the grand jury work will finish before week’s end.
At least 24 injured in the late collapse of two floors of a Dauphine street residence near a funeral for Mrs. Lawrence Ingargiola. More than 40 mourners fell to the ground floor as timbers gave way, with the coffin and corpse among the debris. Fred Meyer and Otto Meyer aided in rescues during the chaos.
The Drew Home Demonstration club won first place among ten parish clubs at the Ouachita Valley Fair held near West Monroe. Eureka took second and Calhoun third, with Sterlington, Colony, Logtown, Swartz, Okaloosa, Claiborne and Southern also listed. Winners in other departments will be announced Monday as the six day event closes tonight.
Treasury officials said it was a legitimate guess that if Long had lived longer the government would have filed an income tax suit. They refused to confirm or deny rumors about his tax returns though indictments had been issued against several of Long's associates. Long claimed on the senate floor that his returns were under investigation.
Eldredge Allen, 16, of BrainTree High School, swallowed his tongue after being kicked in the Adams apple during a final scrimmage. Spectator Dr. Arthur P. Morris performed first aid and he was taken to Quincy hospital. later reports said he was out of danger and to be sent home.
Mrs. Nellie Tipton Muench, former St. Louis society matron, is acquitted of conspiracy in the 1932 Dr. Isaac D. Kelley ransom abduction case after 5 1 2 hours of deliberation. The verdict, delivered in Mexico Missouri, follows dramatic witness moments and ends state efforts to link her to the crime. Angela Rosegrant and Felix Mc Donald were already convicted and sentenced to 20 to 60 years.
The Department of Commerce finds continued gains in retail and wholesale trade in the week ended Wednesday with notable or widespread industrial improvements. New York shows broad gains in multiple sectors, Detroit predicts higher car demand, and holiday buying activity begins with expectations of larger volumes than last year.
Kenosha Wisconsin October 5. Herman Slater 41 a Burlington area farmer was killed while with 150 to 200 farmers who blocked five milk trucks bound for Chicago on highway 42 at 1 20 am. The first truck swerved struck Slater. the others passed over him. Sheriff C F Erickson said driver William Leahy was detained for questioning after the truck train was followed to Lake Forest Illinois and brought back to Kenosha.
Louisiana voters await January 21 statewide Democratic primary, with no Long anti Long alliance expected. Huey P Long supporters show no sign of easing dictatorship while anti Longs plan a united front for fair elections. Two anti Long candidates for governor are Cleveland Dear and Mason Spencer. Dear says a state organization has been laid.
Harold F. McCormick and William C. Cummings, Chicago industrial leaders, have been threatened with abduction and blackmail over three weeks. Police Captain John Prendergast said undercover efforts failed to reveal a collector despite an agreed 30 000 ransom.
In Carthage Mississippi three high school girls died when a small skiff sank on Pearl River during a camp outing. Miss Mary Norwood Puryear and two students were rescued. The victims were Gene Wagoner 15, Mary Elizabeth Henderson 13, and Dollie Boozer 14. The party had 32 home economics students at McMillan’s camp five miles southwest of Carthage.
Count Galleazzo Ciano announced Aduwa would fall this afternoon as Italian forces under Gen Marivagna closed in. Italian troops, with tanks, pressed toward the city while Ethiopian resistance was limited to sniping from mud huts. Ethiopian estimates put forces at 20 000 to 25 000 defending against about 75 000 Italians. No word from Italian Consul Franca of Aduwa who could not evacuate in time.
Crowley La Oct 5 A resolution from the Acadia parish Democratic executive committee condemns state law methods for selecting election officials and urges candidates be allowed to submit their own commissioners The measure calls for names to be drawn by a public committee as before and for drawn individuals to be appointed as commissioners and alternates under existing law
Frank Creighton of 715 South Section Street was rushed to Riverside sanitarium after his car rolled near DeSiard and Sterlington roads. He had a lacerated eye, bruises, abrasions, and a back injury requiring an X ray. A. W. Fisher of 622 Rochelle Avenue was treated at St. Francis sanitarium for head and hand cuts after his car collided with a parked unlit truck on the highway at Girard.
In Geneva the League of Nations reports that Ethiopia bears no blame for the African conflict while Italy is implied the aggressor. A six member strategy board will assess military sanctions as the council adjourns, and President Benes calls a special assembly as fighting persists.
Fierce fighting raged on the northern Ethiopian front near Adigrat as Ethiopian troops clashed with Italian forces. Reports described bayonet and dagger combat with planes overhead and heavy casualties on the Ogaden southern front. An official communique claimed Aduwa remained Ethiopian held with encirclement expected by evening.
Addis Ababa report cites Ras Seyoum saying Italian troops captured Wageta and Engeula south of Aduwa at 4 p m Saturday. He notes heavy casualties on both sides including four Italian officers. Italians advance within 10 kilometers of the frontier as air raids target Adigrat and surrounding areas.
