Chapman Becomes 24th Marine Corps Commandant

Lt. Gen. Leonard F. Chapman Jr. accepted the Marines battle flag in a spit and polish change of command ceremony in Washington. He takes over from Gen. Wallace M. Greene Jr. and will be formally sworn in January 1. Capt. Charles Robb presented the flag, praising Greene’s leadership and Chapman’s evident promise.

NYSE Soars Near Record As Dow Tops 900

New York trading surged Friday closing near a record as the Dow Jones Industrial Average climbs 7.78 to 905.11 marking the first time above 900 since October. Volume reaches 14.95 million shares, second only to the 16.41 million on October 29, 1929, the crash day.

Drowning near Vidalia claims life of Bossier City youth

Barry Brown an 18 year old from Bossier City drowned when the boat he rode in with Joe McNeely 15 and Michael Beam 17 capsized near Cocodrie Bayou and Shell Road Barpis joining point about 20 miles below Vidalia. Brown stood in front of the craft as it began taking on water and fell overboard unable to swim. The other boys reached shore and four deer dogs swam to safety as rescuers dragged the riverfront area amid strong currents and cold water.
