Gen. William C. Westmoreland says American forces will curtail offensive actions for 24 hours to observe Christmas and allow Viet Cong defectors via the Chieu Hoi program. Bombing over North and South Vietnam will halt during the allied cease fire unless violations occur.
Fourth District Judge Mack I. Barham will assume the Louisiana State Supreme Court seat vacated by Justice Frank W. Hawtorne on January 1. With Republicans failing to file by the 5 p.m. deadline, Barham was the unopposed Democratic nominee and is expected to take office in February.
A Coast Guard helicopter rescued Neal Adams of Houma, Joe Buckley of Bastrop, and William Buckley of Tibodaux after their boat ran aground near Fr Bayou, about 20 miles south-southwest of Houma on Friday. The men were taken to their car in Tieriot.
Jes s Ramblin Mrs Henry A Konnegay Jr and her three year old son David enjoyed a pleasant Christmas morning as neighborhood children sang carols in their yard. A Monroe cleaning clerk quipped about a large shirt order after a customer noted wanting a white Christmas.
Jack Hesketh, chairman of the Goodfellows Fund Drive, praised area residents for a record 9430.31 dollars in contributions through Saturday. He said the large total enabled aid to more needy families and extra food and clothing for Christmas. Contributions received after today will be acknowledged later.

In Fairyland Georgia a 175-pound Great Dane named Scarlet killed four year old Darla Anne Harper while she played in the front yard. She died at Children’s Hospital in Chattanooga from multiple bites to the head and stomach after being chased from the yard by her mother.
President Johnson and Pope Paul VI shared hopes for peace in Vietnam during an hour long audience in Vatican City. Johnson expressed willingness to seek peace talks and halt bombing if North Vietnam shows restraint. the Pope suggested possible mediation. The trip included Rome stopovers with security scenes and a dramatic helicopter visit to the Vatican.

A fire aboard the U S aircraft carrier Kearsarge at Sasebo port in southern Japan killed three crewmen, according to U S Navy sources. The ship remained burning as officials at Yokosuka base reported no further details. The carrier, an antisubmarine aircraft ship, has been off Vietnam with its postal office serving troops aboard multiple ships.
Hugh Chambers Stewart, born September 5 1866 in Dromore Ireland, received Huntington Memorial Hospital the Pacemaker to regulate his heartbeat. The 100 year old patient was hospitalized since December 10 after a fainting spell and is described as doing fine in intensive care.
