Report notes heavy Allied losses and rising casualties as Allied First Army confronts a German surprise offensive in Bel Luxembourg. Eisenhower calls for a walllike push to disrupt German gamble while Allied air and ground units reinforce and blunt the breakthrough.
OPA announces that common foods including certain cuts of beef veal lamb and canned goods may return to rationing free status at the start of the new year. A decision to reinstate rationing was discussed with Director Fred Vinson and pivotal to warehouse space and war-time supply controls. The change could affect many items while some preserves and frozen foods may stay exempt.
Russian forces drive a 16 mile advance north of the Danube in Hungary and are said to be within 100 miles of Vienna and 72 of Bratislava. Moscow reports heavy fighting near Budapest with a push toward the Ipoly River and the Hron valley, while Berlin claims a German counterattack.
In Mangham Louisiana a truck plowed into the C Harper Pharmacy injuring Mayor H B Chamberlin and two others who were severely hurt. The front of the drug store was demolished and the mayor, who was shopping, was thrown to the floor as Mrs Harper stood nearby in shock.
A Soviet commission reports mass killings by Germans in three camps in Lwow province Poland. Victims include civilians and POWs from multiple nations. The inquiry alleges Gestapo leader Heinrich Himmler directly oversaw the abuses including the water burial torture and child executions. The German government response is noted on page five.
The Good Fellows season closed at a record $2 565 54 as city trucks delivered hundreds of sacks of groceries toys and clothing to disadvantaged families in the Twin Cities Monroe and West Monroe. The charity plans to brighten homes of many less privileged for at least one day through its activities.
Kadner B Richardson son of George E Richardson Monroe was reported lost and wounded in action in Belgium by War Department messages received by his father. Four telegrams arrived with the first three saying he was lost in action and the final message stating he was found wounded in Belgium in serious condition. He is Neville High School graduate and attended Northeast Junior College before enlisting in 1942 at 18.
In northwestern Greece fifteen thousand to twenty thousand left wing E L A S fighters attacked a rightist stronghold near Ioannina amid ongoing civil conflict. British Indian troops supported by naval gunfire and Beaufighters clash with ELAS north of Piraeus while British officials condemn the assault as unprovoked.
New Orleans on December 23, 4%-year-old Mark Parsons of Bartlesville Oklahoma was held on $2000 bond charged with a Mann Act violation. Parsons and a 1x-year-old girl allegedly brought from Los Angeles were arraigned before U S Commissioner R H Carter Jr. The girl identified as Betty Devers was held on $500 bond.
General MacArthur's headquarters reports a daylight Liberator raid on Clark Field destroying most of the Japanese planes there. U S troops finish clearing the Ormoc corridor on Leyte with 3 788 more enemy dead in one day, eight days totaling 16 661.
Berlin broadcasts claimed Eisenhower was forced to drain manpower from the western front to halt Rundstedt’s offensive in the north. They said American forces retreated south, Patton moved to threatened sectors, and the garrison at St Nazaire opened an attack as Allied news stayed dark.
The News-Star and World announce no publication Monday afternoon to rest for two days and due to wartime newsprint restrictions. Advertising will pause from Tuesday morning through Friday morning December 29 except for theater and classified ads. Editor Wilson Ewing extends Christmas wishes.
Washington reports a government order shutting down horse and dog racing and restricting materials, fuel, and transport for noncompliant businesses. Selective Service will review professional athletes for military service, as Byrnes leads broader moves to accelerate the war effort and tighten manpower controls.
Col. George B. Dany presented medals to three Monroe residents and two nearby locals for their sons and husbands listed as prisoners of war or missing in action. The event capped graduation of class 44-52N the last navigation school class of the year. Capt. William C. Clark explained the navigator's role in combat crews.
Mrs. Sadie Frazee Crawford, 84, died after her clothing ignited before a gas heater at her daughter's Winnsboro home. She was taken to a Winnsboro hospital where funeral plans were pending. Survived by four daughters, two sons, and a sister.
American relief columns strike into the German southern flank as 4500 air sorties hit invasion columns. Allied reports say German forces pull back after hard fighting by doughboys in the Malmedy and Stavelot sectors, with over 1000 German dead in the snow.
American fliers reported destroying at least 171 enemy planes in nearly 3,000 sorties in support of U S ground forces amid the Rundstedt offensive. Paris headquarters cited 178 destroyed. Ninth air force and fighter-bombers joined heavy aerial battles. 3 Eighth air force bombers and 13 fighters were lost. Mosquitos also bombed rail routes northeast of Bonn and east overnight.
Adolf A. Berle is slated for appointment as ambassador to Brazil, resigning as assistant secretary of state amid the department shakeup. A veteran of international affairs, this will be his first foreign post, with Rio viewed as key to countering Argentine influence and Nazi sway in Latin America.
The fourth wartime Christmas will be observed in Twin Cities churches with carols and prayers for world peace. Many homes show empty chairs while others host service members on furlough. Catholic and Episcopal services are elaborate with Midnight Mass at St Matthew’s and choral Eucharist at Grace Episcopal. First Presbyterian offers a musical program as continued on the third page.
About 500 American servicemen on leave from fronts in Europe and North Africa converge on Bethlehem to celebrate the Prince of Peace. They visit the Church of the Nativity, attend midnight mass, and hear a 2000-strong Polish choir with Bethlehem bells. An American choir broadcasts from inside the church.
