Senator Percy Escapes Mortar Fire in Dakson Visit
Sen Charles Percy and eight Americans narrowly escaped mortar and small arms fire during an unescorted stop at Dakson village in Ilinos Republic. Percy suffered minor scratches while the group took cover and was evacuated by helicopter with armed Army escorts. In a separate six day clash near Bong Son, 471 Viet Cong and North Vietnamese soldiers were killed while allied forces suffered 33 American and 30 South Vietnamese deaths and 147 American plus 71 South Vietnamese wounded. The fighting ended with the fall of Truong Lam and discovery of about 60 fresh graves.
