Monroe USO reports July service surge and new activities
Local USO in Monroe filed July statistics showing over 27 000 participants including service members and civilians. New director John Leonard and associate director Sam Collins oversaw expanded activities at Selman field, hospital visits, dances, bingo, music hours, outdoor recreation, home hospitality and church events, with 10 326 dancer attendees and 4 840 in dramatic and musical programs.

News-Star-World Pilot Completes 50th Combat Mission
Captain Arthur W. Cruikshank Jr., 22, former News-Star-World salesman, earned the Distinguished Flying Cross after 50 combat missions in the Far East. He previously shot down three Zeros near Canton during U S 14th Air Force operations as Mitchell bombers attacked Tien Ho airfield and Warhawks repelled enemy intercepts.

Captain Cruikshank serves with Flying Tigers unit
Captain Cruikshank trained at Randolph and Kelly Fields in 1941 and sailed from the states in 1942. He served in Africa and India before joining the 23rd fighter squadron which took over the Flying Tigers. He has been named intelligence officer for his group but regrets giving up combat time for new duties. Inmates at Lewisburg Penitentiary raised 850 for the Red Cross.

Navy chaplains urged to expand force for global war
Commander E D Walbridge in New Orleans urged a large increase in the Navy chaplain corps within 18 months to meet expanding forces. He noted over 1,500 chaplains now serve across ships, shore stations, the Marines and Coast Guard, with total forces expected at 2,865 by end of 1943. Applicants must complete college and seminary study, be ordained, and receive denomination endorsement.
