Austin Cox Jr was found guilty of first degree murder in a Utah double murder case involving five deaths last July. The all verdict with no clemency recommendation means the death sentence is mandatory under state law. Cox’s defense cited insanity. sentencing by Judge Glenn W. Cairo reports Colonel John R. Kane of Shreveport Louisiana received the Congressional Medal of Honor for the Ploesti raid on August 1. General Lewis Brereton presented the award at a ceremony on the Gezira polo field with U S British and Egyptian forces in attendance. Brereton also received the Air Medal and Strahm the Legion of Merit for service in the Middle East theater.
Allied troops broadened their foothold on the toe of Italy with swift gains against weak resistance. Reggio Calabria and San Giovanni fell as Axis withdrawals continued, with Italian prisoners taken and reinforcements streaming into Calabria.
Baton Rouge La September 4 The states civil service department says 8671 persons earned full status in qualifying examinations and more than 2006 names are on competitive lists Over 706 have been appointed from eligible lists In October continuous examinations will begin for clerks stenographers messengers and typists to fill vacancies Competitive tests for 19 positions including social welfare revenue mechanics and more will be announced within 90 days Staffer Wilfrid E Parke says 343 are subject to qualifying exams. 548 failed 632 are on leave and some in the armed services The department aims to complete exams for all non on leave within 60 days The Louisiana Medical Society offers physicals for laboring class posts to aid those in need showing strong support for nonpolitical protection
Baton Rouge reports that state capitol and parish offices will close on Monday for a second holiday in two weeks. Labor Day is set for September 6, and last Monday marked the late Senator Huey P Long's memorial holiday. Banks and financial institutions will be closed as well.
