In a pair of launches next week the United States will aim to put an unmanned Project Mercury capsule into orbit and loft a space platform to support deep space payloads. The test marks a step toward placing an American astronaut in lunar orbit this decade.
Federal Judge Walter E. Hoffman continued into Monday a hearing over the Bahia de Nipe, a 3800-ton Cuban freighter seized by 10 crewmen seeking asylum. The judge weighed whether the Coast Guard can bar the U.S. marshal from attaching the ship for debts while Cuba seeks return of the vessel.
Diplomats predicted the U N General Assembly would urge France to pull its forces from Bizerte City Tunisia and to negotiate withdrawal terms. They expected more than 30 UN members to back an Asian African resolution and enough abstentions to secure a two thirds majority among 99 members.
Federal agents seized nearly $300000 in counterfeit twenty dollar bills and arrested Morris Leon Chaney, a former newspaperman from Danville, Virginia. Investigators also seized $250000 more in fake bills and printing plates at his home near Danville and sought a search warrant for Piedmont Printing Co. in nearby Chatham. A linked arrest in West Virginia led to the case.

The Commerce Department says the economic recovery from last winter's recession was faster than in the prior postwar slumps. Profits rose sharply in spring, with private estimates suggesting a yearly rate around 44 billion dollars, and car output jumped from 1.196 million to 1.553 million in the second quarter. Three people, including two West Monroe women, were injured in a three car collision near Winnfield on Highway 64. Mrs. Rose Oglesby suffered a fractured right ankle and Mrs. H A Lane had a possible broken leg and facial lacerations. Daniel Stranger received bruises and shock. The Stranger car attempted to pass the Stewart car, veered, and struck Oglesby then the Stewart vehicle. The two women were treated locally then moved to Monroe.

Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson drew a riotous welcome from West Berlin as he pledged free Berlin and tied the city to the free world. He warned the Communists against blocking access to the city. A 1500 man U S Army battle group moved toward East German border to reinforce the Berlin garrison as Britain sent 18 troop carriers and 16 scout cars.
In Moscow the Soviet Union rejected Western protests over East Germany closing Berlin’s border. It accused the United States Britain and France of deception bribery and blackmail and blamed Western occupation rights for Berlin’s unrest. The note warned the border issue would end with a German peace treaty and cited possible separate talks with East Germany by Khrushchev.
Sen. Margaret Chase Smith of Maine and Sen. Benjamin A. Smith of Massachusetts note that 21 individuals named Smith from 17 states have served in the Senate since the Republic's founding. They state this name leads all others, with Johnson second at 15 and Williams and Brown tied at 12.
Inez Miller 36 admitted the Victor Hugo award of the French Academy of Arts was fictitious after she enjoyed days of praise for helping orphans and artists. The Times found her tale inconsistent with employment records and no evidence of the academy or award exists.
Louisiana Treasurer A P Tugwell cites Public Affairs Research Council findings supporting his view of the state’s 1960 general fund deficit. PAR pegged the year end deficit at 29 million dollars, with Tugwell noting the June 30 1961 deficit around 30 million depending on agency funds accounting.
