Java reports say the Indonesian Republic will accept the UN cease fire if Dutch troops retreat to demarcation lines. Dutch forces claim gains in Sumatra while debate continues in the Netherlands East Indies government over enforcing the order. Van Mook doubts universal enforcement but welcomes U S offers of good offices.
The United Nations Security Council ordered an immediate cease fire in Indonesia and between the Netherlands and Indonesia. A U.N. official said replies from both governments were expected in two or three days. The decision, the fastest action by the U.N., was wired to Indonesia and delivered to the Dutch ambassador in Washington for transmission.
The Hague August 2 The Netherlands cabinet met in an extraordinary session to discuss the United Nations security council action in the East Indies conflict. U S Ambassador Baruch pledged prompt developments and offered good offices for mediation which the Dutch foreign minister said had been gladly accepted. The status of the council resolution drew confusion as media framed it as a request rather than an order.
Louisiana State University Board of Supervisors reaffirmed Dr. Harold W. Stoke as LSU president and kept James E. McLemore as chairman after a dissenting bid by John Y. Fauntleroy and Dr. Emmett Irwin failed for lack of a second. Fauntleroy vowed to seek legal action, while others said counsel and the attorney general deemed July proceedings legal.
