Monona Grove defeats Monroe 44 to 19 in conference opener

Monona Grove Silver Eagles snapped Monroe Cheesemakers 44 to 19 at T. R. Holyoke Athletic Field. Mike McCarty led the ground attack with 197 yards while Scott Martin added 116 rushing yards and Jerry Hilgendorf threw for 121 passing yards and a 20 yard TD to Noll. Monroe gained 198 rushing and 121 passing, but the visitors fell behind early and could not overcome the Monona rush.

Winger Receives 64 Year Masonic Lodge Honor at 100

Helen Oliver Vinger, Argyle, marked his 100th birthday on September 3 with a plaque for 64 years of Argyle Masonic lodge membership. Presentation by Clayton Watkins and Vernus Nelson Sr. occurred as he lay in St. Clare Hospital, Monroe, where he now resides at Monroe Manor. The Monroe post office flag was briefly at half mast then raised after observers noted the error. Nearby visitors from New Orleans include Mr. and Mrs. E A Reeder and Misses Clem and Lena Martin, who toured Glacier National Park during their honeymoon 44 years ago.

Hatfield Finishes Second In Maryland GOP Primary

Agnes Hatfield a University of Maryland child studies professor finished second in Maryland's 5th District Republican primary, receiving 2200 votes. Lawrence J. Hogan won with 5134 votes. Hatfield endorsed William R. Martin who finished last with 201. Hatfield says ballot order gave her edge and rules out future campaigns.

Youth injured in area accident near Monroe

Gerald L. Gerber an 18 year old from Monticello was hospitalized with multiple contusions after his car rolled on Highway 69 three miles north of Monroe. He said he dozed off and swerved to avoid a guard post. Deputies reported another one car crash near Monroe with no injuries.

Eagles To Host District Meeting In Monroe

The Monroe Aerie and Auxiliary of the Fraternal Order of Eagles will host the district meeting tomorrow afternoon in the Eagles Clubrooms. It opens at 2 o'clock with men and women meeting separately, followed by refreshments. Attendees will come from New Glarus, Madison, Baraboo, Reedsburg, Wisconsin Dells, Janesville, Beloit and Monroe.
