Monroe FFA Leads Winners Named At Hog Festival

The Fall Hog Festival at Monroe drew 27 market hog FFA judging teams. Monroe FFA claimed the champion team with Sommers Sippel and Holyoke leading the squad. high individual honors went to Larry Sommers, with John Paynton among top junior and senior placers.

Moita do Ribatejo stand collapse kills six in bull run

In Moita do Ribatejo Portugal a spectators stand collapsed during a bull running event killing at least six and injuring nearly 200. Police report the death toll could rise as hospitals in the region relay ongoing counts. A steel scaffold failed under the crowd. All victims were Portuguese.

Wisconsin dairymen urged to consider alternative co op merger plan

In Baraboo and Reedsburg area meetings Wisconsin dairy farmers from up to 60 counties were urged to pursue an alternative to the Midwest Cooperative proposal. Wisconsin Dairies Cooperative proposed merging with neighboring co ops to form a large system. Williams said the plan is in planning. the Lake to Lake Cooperative attended but did not state its reaction. Delegates supported mergers with neighbors and a study of consolidating milk marketing orders from Wisconsin to Texas. A two cent per hundred pounds promotion fund was voted down last year.

Trade tanker Manhattan opens Northwest Passage voyage

The 1005 foot tanker Manhattan, built for ice breaking, becomes the first commercial vessel to reach open water north of the Arctic Circle en route to Point Barrow Alaska. Humble Oil officials say commercial viability will be assessed in the 1970s as data from the voyage is reviewed.

Miller Youth Remains In Critical Condition

Robert Miller, 16, son of Mr and Mrs Joe E Miller of Madison, suffers a basal skull fracture and head injuries from a Beltline crash. He remains in a coma at Madison General Hospital and a tracheotomy was planned to aid breathing.
