The House voted 280 to 121 to override President Eisenhower on the second public works appropriation bill, creating the first two thirds override since his presidency. The measure now goes to the Senate with prompt action expected.
A St Louis to Baltimore passenger train hit a bus at a grade crossing in Mountain Lake Park Maryland at 8 30 am. Seven of the 26 children aboard were killed and 10 were seriously injured. The bus driver Leroy Campbell 49 said he opened the door to help children escape after the bus stalled. The injured were taken to an Oakland hospital. The students were en route to Southern High and Dennett Elementary Schools in Oakland.
Fred Leach 73 of Friendship Township died Wednesday when a board cover slipped sending him 25 feet into a dry well shaft at his rural home. Neighbors reported the accident and authorities investigated the scene.
Walter L. Day began barbering as a teen in 1913 in Monroe after learning through apprenticeship. The shop he owns on Monroe’s square remains busy with three chairs and staff including Gaylord Swenson and Morton Wittner. Day has held civic roles with the Chamber of Commerce Kiwanis and Knights of Pythias while his son Wendell works at Grain Processing Co. in Muscatine IA.

The United States plans a vast security cordon for Soviet Premier Khrushchev including up to 15 000 security personnel along a coast to coast tour route. About 2 500 will be on duty along the route into Washington for his arrival at Andrews Air Force Base. MADISON The federal government has declared land and buildings in the Badger Ordnance Works housing area near Baraboo as surplus and offered the property to eligible public agencies.
Gov. Nelson signed a law establishing the Department of Resource Development to consolidate planning, development, and promotion from 13 agencies. The measure abolishes the Industrial Development and State Planning divisions and aims to coordinate orderly municipal, recreation tourism, and northern Wisconsin economic development programs. The governor may appoint a director soon, potentially David Carley.
Mrs. Neil Swiggum aged 70 died at St. Clare hospital after a six year illness. She was born Iva Christine Gordee Aug 29 1889 in Jordan Township and married Neil Swiggum Apr 10 1913. The Browntown resident leaves six children and 21 grandchildren with ties to Monroe and Fr. Leonard Wood Missouri. Funeral services are planned at Jordan Lutheran Church with burial in the church cemetery.
