Nationwide Labor Day Traffic Toll Nears Record

The all time Labor Day record is 461 in 1951, with total holiday deaths at 658 including drownings and miscellaneous accidents. Ex-con Knight leads police to grave, admits killing trooper
Alvin Knight, 48, led officers to a shallow grave 30 miles northeast of East Lansing where state trooper Albert Souden, 29, was found shot in the head back and leg. Knight, who has spent 29 years in prison or mental hospitals, confessed after his wife Clara Louden appealed for the missing man’s whereabouts. The trooper’s car was recovered Friday and Knight was captured in a cottage about 150 miles from the murder scene.

Carl A. Nybroten 49 of Route 2 Argyle died Sunday at St. Clare hospital after a week with heart illness. Born January 17 1910 in Adams Township he was married to Edna Thompson in 1940. He farmed in Adams Township and served 16 years as Adams Lutheran church trustee. Surviving wife three sisters and burial at Adams church cemetery tomorrow after services at 1 30 p.m. at Adams church. The Erickson funeral home handled arrangements.

Portmann, a Rotary International Foundation Scholar, will study at the University of Wisconsin this fall. They also enjoyed the Wilhelm Tell pageant in New Glarus and were guests at the club's Eugene hotel meeting. Monroe Rotary is the first unit in District 615 to honor them.
