Holidays Toll In Wisconsin Traffic Crashes
Twelve people died in Wisconsin highway crashes over the Labor Day weekend, raising the year toll to 587. Notable fatalities include John F. Sturm, 22, of Chilton, in a crash west of Chilton on Highway 151, and a River Falls pickup overturn that killed Donald Pechuman, 4, and Larry Sukawatey, 12. Additional deaths occurred near Poplar, Evansville, Gresham, Watertown, Marinette, and Wisconsin Dells, with earlier listed victims including Kovach, Krueger, Bollwahm, and Alaniz. In the 1961 Monroe Country Club season finale Becker defeats Dr. Robert J. Smith 4 and 3 in a 36 hole final to claim his 15th club championship. Smith led early, but Becker surged after lunch, overcame a two-stroke penalty, and closed out the match.

County Deputies Probe Break-In At Trucks Inc
Deputies investigate a break-in at Trucks Inc just outside the city limits. About $30 was stolen from a desk drawer in a burglary that occurred between Saturday night and Sunday morning. Sheriff A Charles Howe credited firm president Philip M Gordon with reporting the incident and said entry used a window and an inside unlock. the attempted safe city remains unsuccessful.

Rites Tomorrow For Frank Leopold Dies In Auto Crash
Services for 60 year old Frank S. Leopold of Spring Grove Township will be held at 2 p.m. tomorrow at Newcom funeral home Brodhead officiated by Rev. W L King. Leopold suffered a skull fracture and brain injury plus a broken leg when his car left County Trunk 6 struck an embankment and tree and rolled. His nine month old granddaughter Nancy Marie Kendall was treated for a broken arm and released. The fatality brings county traffic deaths to nine this year. Leopold born December 21 1900 was a Monroe Township native and longtime Spring Grove farmer. He served on the Bright school board for 15 years led the Oakley 4H Club five years and attended Oakley Union Church. Survivors include his wife two daughters three sons two brothers and a sister and grandchildren.

Most Successful Wilhelm Tell Pageant Sets Attendance Record
The Wilhelm Tell pageant in New Glarus drew over 3,500 for the English Freedom play, filling Tell grounds and turning away fans. About 1,500 attended the German version, the largest crowd for that production, as area communities aided housing and park space near the New Glarus woods state park.

John Backe 77 Dies In Monroe Wisconsin
John Backe aged 77 of 2403 11th Avenue Monroe died at 6 45 am in St. Clare hospital after a two week illness. He managed Capital Cheese Co Monroe for twenty years and earlier was a partner in Lanner and Backe Cheese Co Argyle from 1913 to 1920. Born October 2 1883 in Eidsberg Norway he came to America in 1904 settling in Chicago. He married Grace Helen Berg in Chicago April 5 1913 and later moved to Argyle before settling in Monroe in 1933. Surviving are his wife a son John W Rockford a sister Sarah in Norway and two grandchildren one daughter Grace died January 7 1941. He attended Immanuel EUB church and was a noted stamp and coin collector with a home sales business and a full collection of Norwegian coins. Services Thursday at 1 30 pm at Shriner Neushwan jer funeral home with burial in Greenwood cemetery.

Monroe Students Return to Full Schedule in Thursday Start
UW School of Education Dean Linasey J Stues addressed Monroe teachers this morning to mark the first week of school activities. Elementary pupils begin orientation this afternoon and full classes Thursday while high and junior high students had registered earlier and will start Thursday. A Monroe Education Association meeting followed the address and afternoon teacher meetings were planned. An all day language workshop for elementary and junior high teachers starts 9 am tomorrow with staff meetings at 1 15 pm. A Kiwanis hosted welcome luncheon for new teachers was held yesterday with Kiwanis president Ernest Spring and Supt Hue nink giving remarks. St Victors parochial school opened its full schedule today.
