The Monroe Area Civil Defense will test warning sirens tomorrow with the first sound for tornado or severe storm and the second for attack alerts. Sirens are to be tested once monthly on the first Wednesday, after earlier bi monthly testing in summer. All fire sirens are tested each Saturday noon.
The Labor Day weekend toll rose to ten with three deaths in two separate crashes near New Glarus and Juda. Janice Stevning and Linda Page, both Freeport residents, died when their car collided with Donald Jenson’s northbound vehicle on Wis. 69. Jenson and another Stevning passenger were hospitalized, as were two more Stevning relatives. A Juda man, James Blum, was killed crossing CTS while struck by a southbound car near Juda. The crashes led to hospital stays, autopsy details, and local funeral arrangements. An all night mediation between Kenosha educators and the school board ended without an agreement.
John H Bruni 62 of 1125 23rd Ave Monroe died at 3:06 am Sept 4 at St Clare Hospital after a heart arrest. He founded Bruni Miller in 1947 with Uno Miller later expanding into a firm at 1900 12th St. The veteran contractor was born Sept 30 1910 in Wecota SD and leaves widow Jessie Mae Ward a son John Gordon Bruni and a daughter Maureen Drake among others. Services Sept 6 at Newcomer Funeral Home with burial Calvary Cemetery and Lions Club memorials established.
