In CORT Ireland AP report the Pisces III midget submarine was to be hoisted from 1,375 feet depth near Cork as air ran low. Two men Roger Mallinson and an unnamed partner conserved oxygen while rescue subs, lines, and ships worked to bring the craft to surface before air exhausted.

Ottawa reports Parliament approved a bill to end the 10 day railroad strike. It orders 56,000 nonoperating workers to return by Sunday 12:01 am and raises hourly wages to 4.19 by July 1 1974 with other raises for rail staff. Union leaders threaten continued action if the bill is unsatisfactory and face possible two year prison terms for defying the law.
Wisconsin reports highest measles and rubella rates in the nation as Gov Lucey proclaims immunization month. He also announced $16 665 in advance disaster aid for Eau Claire and county flood damages. Other items cover unemployment claims drop and a legislative push to fix the Corrupt Practices Act.
Madison UW officials defend phasing out Afro American and native American centers amid a protest by about 500 supporters. Leaders warn broader funding for non academic fraternal groups could fracture the university and attract calls for similar facilities for gays lesbians and other cultural groups.
