New York Sees Warmest Year on Record

The Weather Bureau confirms the metropolitan region endured its hottest summer since 1869 with 34 days at or above 90 degrees, beating 1944’s 33. The average temperature was 77.3 degrees, surpassing 1949, and rainfall totaled only 4.31 inches, a record low since 1894’s 4.36 inches.

Overtime Pay and Riots Drive Chicago Police Costs

Chicago faced citywide unrest with racial demonstrations and violence causing over 2.5 million in damages and police overtime. Overtime to police King era marches totaled 130000, and 245000 during three West Side riots. National Guard activation added 284236, while insured damages reached 500000 to 1 million, up to 2 million uninsured. 4200 troops served 10 days beginning July 15, with overtime for officers amid white neighbor protests. Supt. O W Wilson said overtime is preferred to time off, to maintain crime-fighting.

Lewis VanWagenen Feted After 40 Years at Solomon Auto Parts

Lewis VanWagenen honored at a surprise dinner marking forty years as secretary treasurer of Solomon Auto Parts. The event, at Marco's, included colleagues totaling 219 years of service. Medical Center Moves to New Building Over Holiday

The Medical Center will relocate to 2707 6th St over the weekend with all operations ready by Tuesday. The current site at 2101 6th St closes after today’s hours and Saturday morning hours are canceled. The two story building on a two acre lot has twice the space and was funded by Sisters of St Agnes.
