A special Senate committee completed the five category censure charges against Sen. McCarthy with hearings recessed until next Tuesday. The panel weighed possible espionage act violations while McCarthy and his attorney prepare a defense, citing material from the Army hearings and FBI documents.
Dates for county and regional corn picking contests were moved to October 8 and 9 with rain dates October 10 and 11. Events, sponsored by Green County Farm Foundation, will be at Spring Brook Farm near Brodhead and prep for state and national contests on October 15 and 16 near Janesville. Committees were named for the event with C S Pierce as general chairman and Myron E. Jeglum noting farm-hunt delays. housing, rules, safety and publicity teams named with many local officers listed.
The Manila army announced it busted a sinister Communist espionage ring tied to the SEATO conference opening. Dr Hong Ki Khung, a 35 year old Korean national, is under arrest with documents on conference mechanics and proposals. Intelligence links to three governments indicate a broader espionage network. Five French soldiers were killed in a clash with Tunisian nationalists in the southern mountains.
York Herald Tribune reports Vice President Nixon carried a plea from President Eisenhower to Governor Dewey to seek re election. Nixon urged Dewey at the national governors conference in Bolton Landing New York in mid July, saying he would be the strongest candidate the party could nominate in what polls expect to be a tough year in New York. Dewey has not decided on a fourth term. United States Senator Irving Ives is mentioned as a leading alternative. The paper says the president’s wish was read by observers as nearly a command.

The CIO United Rubber Workers Union reports new agreements with four tire makers in Arron Ohio affecting about 5,700 employees. Baldwin Rubber Co raises 3 percent. Richardson Co 6 to 9 cents. Seiberling Rubber Co 6 percent. Mohawk Rubber Co 5 cents. Major firms Goodyear, B F Goodrich and U S Rubber already signed, averaging about 6 percent on a $2.10 hourly base. Firestone remains in slow talks, with progress described as slow.
John G Ward testified at the Fleming court martial that Lt Col Harry Fleming helped pass on a tape trial call for UN forces to leave Korea and took part in a separate appeal for surrender. Ward, 22, Detroit, captured in 1951, described Red threats and a pattern of pressured broadcasts among POWs at the camp.
West Germany's government demanded full and undiminished sovereignty now, rejecting the Allied peace contract that would leave special rights to the Allies. Bonn linked its stance to defense talks and urged allied cooperation with France for real European defense, noting France has not yet ratified the European army treaty.

Peter Ott 88 of New Glarus died this morning at home after a long illness. Born April 14 1866 he lived in New Glarus lifelong. Survived by wife Rose Voegeli two daughters Mrs J H Hoesly and Mrs Joe C Hoesly three grandchildren seven great grandchildren and two sisters Mrs Jacob Reebly and Mrs Emma Pierce. Services Saturday at 2 pm at Zentner funeral home New Glarus.
Governor Kohler activated 88 Milwaukee military police and six officers for Labor Day weekend to boost highway safety. The plan adds 39 patrol cars and pairs guardsmen with state officers to widen coverage. He cites July and August safety gains with 40 lives saved compared to last year and urges all drivers to heed the campaign.
Mrs. Lars O Wick 10 of 1410 13th avenue died at 11 a m today in St Clare hospital after years of illness. Born June 15 1876 in Bergen Norway she married Lars Wick Nov 12 1902 in Bergen. The couple moved to Wisconsin and later Monroe where she and family resided. Survived by husband three daughters two sons two foster children one foster daughter two sisters and one brother in Norway nine grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Services Saturday at 2 p m in Shriner Neushwander funeral home with Rev C C Warfel of Grace Lutheran Church officiating burial in Green.
