The 11.4 million in transitional aid guarantees next year that no Wisconsin community will receive less than 90 percent of its 1971 shared tax revenue. Some lost shared taxes may be regained as school aid, but taxpayers could still pay more if districts do not cut mill levies to offset higher taxes from municipalities covering lost revenue.
Wisconsin lawmakers welcomed a January recess after passing the budget and tying up loose ends. Many will stay in Madison for interim committees, the Joint Finance Committee, and the Public Building Commission work as the session adjourns until January 18.
Madison Wisconsin Henry L Ahlgren said the University of Wisconsin Extension must receive better state funding after 20 years of limited support. He warned it may have to become self supporting by charging for services and urged broad group involvement to solve current problems.
Marathon County sheriff said Edwin Bonkowski 75 killed his sister Vernonia Bonkowski 73 then shot himself in their Bergen home. The bodies were found by a second sister. the pair had lived together all their lives. Bonkowski was to enter a veterans center and Vernonia a private nursing home.
Wisconsin Governor Patrick Lucey wrote a sharp critique of Attorney General Robert Warren's office citing underuse of manpower and funds. The letter to Sen. Walter Hollander came as Warren sought 366000 dollars for more staff, pending BOGOs review.
