Eight teenage girls aged 15 and 16 barricaded themselves inside the Wisconsin School for Girls protesting discrimination. Deputies used a small amount of tear gas after furnishings were damaged and a door pane broken. No injuries were reported and officials called the damage not excessive.
Two Albany women were hospitalized at St Marys Medical Center in Madison after their car struck a semi trailer on Wis 14 near County Trunk A, two miles south of Oregon. Driver Mrs Birdie Thurman, 69, suffered a broken arm and ribs. passenger Mrs Dorothy Kimball, 71, has a broken arm and scratches. The car reportedly started fast and hit the truck driven by Robert Nowak, 36, of Evergreen Park Illinois, who was unhurt.
Senate Democrats faced a fiscal clash as they sought to derail Republican budget efforts. The move reflects ongoing partisan tensions over spending and policy priorities at the Capitol.
Monroe High School IMC students led by Carol Booth attended the Southwestern Wisconsin Student Librarians convention at Riverdale High School Muscoda. Booth was elected president with Sandy McArdle as historian and Mark Jenson as publicity chairman for the 1972 event to be held in Monroe. Other Monroe attendees included Jan Beach Beth Timm Mary Kosek and Joan Stanek who spoke on the State Library Association. In the state budget debate Republicans blocked most amendments to Gov Luceys 1.98 billion plan, approving only a 2 million local-government aid amendment amid partisan clashes.
The United Nations admitted the People's Republic of China with the Nationalist Chinese expelled. Tokyo praised the move as long term beneficial to Japan while Taipei officials voiced shock and disappointment. Vatican called the action an appeal for universality. Stocks in Taipei fell.
Congressman Robert Kastenmeier of Watertown will be a guest on NBC Today on Wednesday morning. The program may be seen on Madison TV Channel 15 and Milwaukee Channel 4 from 7 to 9 a.m.
