Two local hunters Matt Hefty and Howard Schulz Jr. relate a quiet hunting afternoon east of Monroe that turned exciting when their bird dog spiked a pheasant chase across a field prompting the pair to pursue.
The season in the early 1930s saw as many as 103 hunters on a single farm, a sharp rise from previous years with only two or three. Local locals struggled to reach limits during a quiet week, and hotels near Monroe filled as crowds sought weekend hunts. Some travelers planned trips with flights to the airport for hunting excursions.
Attorney General Tom Clark dismissed O. John Rogge for willfully violating regulations by using a department report in a speech. The speech described Nazi schemes to defeat Roosevelt in 1936 1940 and 1944 and referenced wartime sedition cases against 20 Americans.

The seniors decorated the east side of the square and Goetz building after rain ruined their initial designs. Juniors and sophomores tied for second with a graveyard scene and a miniature football field. Freshmen placed third with a recreation park theme for the Fort Atkinson grid tilt.
Belgrade Premier Tito denounces the Paris peace conference as a failure and claims the rights of Yugoslavs were ignored by former allies. He criticizes big powers for pursuing self interest and vows continued struggle toward a federated Yugoslavia despite unmet claims.
Final preparations for the annual Navy Day gob-fest for all former members of the navy in Green County at 7 p.m. Sunday at the Eugene hotel have been completed. The program adds The Fem-tettes a Monrochbieh school band caintette featuring Virginia Katherine Janet Mildred Krauss Helen Gruenewald and Joanne Davis. Kenneth F. Ginner joins William Rieder Jr. as shore patrolmen in uniform at the informal dinner.
Civilian production officials said higher CPA ceiling prices and a cotton market drop flushed out textile stocks some mills had withheld. Mor ris S Verner Jr noted mills held considerable cloth but no names were given. He said the situation may correct itself as manufacturers seek to dispose of inventories to avoid price drops.
Mrs Alben W Barkley wife of Senate Majority Leader Alben W Barkley is reported critically ill at their Washington home causing him to suspend a western speaking tour and return to the capital.
Butter prices rose three cents in city markets as dairies pushed higher costs to dealers. Merchants could not explain the hike though some had hoped for declines. Meat remained plentiful and pricey with pork the best seller. Housewives avoided beef hoping demand will cut prices. Shortenings appeared in larger quantities with Spry and Crisco expected back soon.
Paul W. Nowatzki of Monroe escaped injury when his car skidded on a curve twenty miles south of Monroe at 11 last night and crashed into a tree. The front end of the vehicle was badly damaged as officials noted unfamiliarity with the road and a skid into an embankment near Richland School.
An Ansar dispatch from Trieste reports the U S Army 88th division says an American Red Cross girl has disappeared in Venezia Giulia. The girl was last seen in Udine and her identity is withheld pending notification of relatives.
Republican speakers rail at Democrats across the nation predicting a sweeping victory in Congress. Col. Philip LaFollette cites GOP prospects for the presidency in 1948, listing Taft Warren Stassen and Dewey as possibilities among others. A simmering clash with Truman policies and labor issues frames the campaign.

Government seizure of Trans-world Airlines is discussed as a wage deadlock leaves 1,400 striking pilots and TWA officials in dispute. The union and company estimate weekly losses around two million dollars.
Kenneth V. Hendrickson, a Monroe police officer since 1942 with wartime Army service, resigns effective Nov. 1 citing inadequate salary. His departure leaves four vacancies in a ten-man force. He notes officers pay $150 monthly plus $20 cost of living bonus and must supply uniforms and gun.

Investigators' reports on Hermann Goering's suicide by poison will be submitted today to the Four Power Commission in Nuernberg. The commission will review the findings before any announcement. It remains unclear if the three anonymous American officers solving the case determined how Goering obtained and used the poison. The commission includes Brig. Gen. Roy V. Rickard, Brig. Paton Wash, Gen. Pierre Morel, and General Malkov.
