Voters to Decide on Urban Renewal Referendum

Monroe City Council set Tuesday December 5 as the date for a special referendum on the Tornado Urban Renewal Project. Eight aldermen unanimously approved the election after a 500-signature petition was corrected and re submitted. Funds approved remain in reserve until voters decide. Opposition cites costs and project scope for Monroe’s west side business development following 1965 tornado.

Wisconsin Senate approves plan to abolish probate and lower courts

The Wisconsin Senate on Tuesday approved a constitutional amendment to abolish all probate and lower courts, routing them to circuit branches while allowing possible recreations in sparsely populated areas. It awaits Assembly action and voter referendum. The Senate also okayed allowing certain villages to become cities by charter, banning lie detector tests for most prospective employees, and prohibiting bid- rigging agreements between contractors and trade associations. It also backed restricting real estate agents from influencing prices by neighborhood rumors.

Calder, Bruni Receive Honor From Monroe Rotary Club

Two honorary member ships were bestowed at the Monroe Rotary Club luncheon. John C. Calder of Monroe and Jacob Bruni of New Glarus received Rotary International vocational and community service honors respectively for their contributions to education, military service, and local civic life. Calder taught vocational training at Monroe High School and promoted moral character. Bruni served in World War I and engaged in automotive work while active in the American Legion, Shrine bands, the New Glarus Fire Department, and county service committees.

Monroe Board of Education reviewed progress on the new Northside Elementary School noting shrub planting, roofing, interior work, and progress on heating ventilation and electrical systems. Egan Infant Rites Held at Cuba City

Graveside services were to be held at Mt Pleasant Cemetery for Christian George Egan infant son of Mr and Mrs George Robert Egan who died Tuesday in a local hospital. Surviving are the parents grandparents and great grandmother, all of Cuba City, with Haudenshield Funeral Home in charge.
