Monroe's 1953 budget will rise with a proposed total of 365 787 50, up 45 994 64 from 1952 and 26 415 above last year. A public hearing on the budget is set for City Hall at 7 30 pm on November 5. 13 year old wins grand champion lamb at Wisconsin Youth Expo
Larry Disch a 13 year old 4 H member from Rock County repeated last year’s feat at the Wisconsin Junior Livestock Exposition in Madison showing a Southdown wether and a first in the lamb division. Betty Ducklow 17 of Oconomowoc earned reserve lamb title with an Oxford. Allen Schuetz of Monroe claimed two seconds in sheep and two sevenths in pigs. Other area winners include Duane Miller Verona June Laverty Mineral Point Lawrence Laverty Mineral Point and more across Shropshire Hampshire and Southdown divisions with various placings. Gene Bobolz 17 Avalon and Wayne Dyson 19 Burlington topped pig divisions and David Lang 18 Beloit held both reserves.

Brodhead Plans Halloween Frolic for Local Youth
The Brodhead Chamber of Commerce sponsors a Halloween Frolic for area youth on Friday October 31 starting at 7 p.m. led by the Brodhead school band with Dwight Newcomer as general chairman and Robert Vogel as cochairman. Awards honor best kiddie float unusual costumes best decorated bike and girl and boy class winners. The parade winds to the school gym where a program and refreshments follow.

U S Study of Monroe Garbage Plan Aims National Model
The U S public health service selected Monroe as the guinea pig for a nationwide study of garbage disposal. Data on Monroe’s collection costs incinerator operation and disposal processes will be examined. Attending were Arthur F. Prestons Corn Harvested Fast Near Juda
About 30 neighbors turned out with seven corn pickers tractors and shovels to harvest the Prestons corn crop south of Juda. Preston, who lost a hand in an Oct 8 corn picker accident, supervised yesterday and helped his hired man Floyd Butke. A shredder unit returned to shred 400 shocks of standing corn as a large group of men and several women aided Mrs Preston and others in the work.

Gov. Kohler approved a $6,330 Conservation Department project to enlarge Zanders Lake at Lake Madison Browntown public grounds. Victor N. Schiller of Monroe won the contract. William Wesley Young 84 a noted newspaperman magazine editor and motion picture producer died at St Barnabas hospital New York City after a long illness He had suffered a paralytic stroke and was retired for years He was born in Monroe October 1 1868 and graduated from Monroe high school in 1887 He helped found the Daily Cardinal at Wisconsin later worked for Joseph Pulitzer at the New York World and for William Randolph Hearst in Chicago He held top roles at Hampton's Good Housekeeping McClure's New York Press Golf and Forum magazines and was connected with fourteen national papers and journals He died while plans to discontinue the Cardinal due to financial troubles were under consideration.

Brodhead Honors Soldier Cpl Gilbertson with Last Rites
Cpl Francis R Gilbertson 18Albany native killed in action August 8 on the Korean battlefield received full military rites at Brodhead Greenwood cemetery. A VFW color squad, chaplain, and Army Navy Air Force veterans attended, with flag presentation to his mother Mrs Jay Bussey. Gilbertson entered service April 20 1951 and was a patrol leader in foreign service since January.
